Objective feedback on the current game : final review of version 0.6 (?)
Ahora mismo
Darek871
No doubt I'm getting ahead of myself a bit, but the next version of the game, which has profound changes to these mechanics, rewritten for co-op, may have a new version 0.7.0 milestone. In any case, considering the new problems to come, for me it should be for the purpose of distinguishing from past/current problems. Perhaps the future will prove me wrong, but, it may be time to do a general review of version 0.6, as far as I'm concerned.

1/ Forewords :

This is personal feedback, it is to be taken as such and nothing else and to be added to all the other feedbacks, detailed and argued of course. It is neither a guide, nor a tutorial nor a summary of the game as it is experienced by everyone.

This feedback echoes the previous version 0.5 (disastrous for me) but also version 0.6.2 which brought a certain number of new features (BRI, Zone 1, quests, etc.)

It is intended mainly for the Dev, and incidentally for those who hesitate to buy the game, but also to convince the reluctant not to buy it, because both are understandable and respectable, even if it bugs some brains.

This feedback is therefore not intended for those who see everything in black or white, (and who have already stopped reading at this point) incapable of the slightest nuance and the slightest objectivity, only capable of childish and puerile criticism of people.

In any case, it's a real pleasure to no longer see their nonsense (and their 1/2 insults) since they've been blocked for a few months now. I've apparently gone through the real toxic profiles on the forum.

When I see the constant (and reasonable) number of players that there have been on the game for a very long time now (excluding the peaks of major releases), we can see that people are not fooled and that they believe what is good to believe.

Obviously, any experience contrary to mine, detailed and argued, is encouraged, and can in theory only be beneficial to the game.

2/ Conditions of this test:

- Optimized PC, 32GB RAM, Ryzen 5 1600 and NVidia 4060
- Game completely erased from disk when version 0.6.0 was released, including residual and personal files
- Updated the game's requirements for the new UE5 engine when version 0.6.0 was released, including drivers, Windows, Visual C++, etc.
- First playthrough between 0.6.0 and 0.6.1, approximately 60 days in-game
- New playthrough started with version 0.6.2.2.1, approximately 60 days in-game
- A little over 700 hours of gameplay in total

( I have not tested the constructions behind, whether for houses or for barricades/walls.)

3/ Rather positive points :

- The chicken coop is working again, the chickens are eating again, they no longer disappear/die (?), there is still a problem with the drink not working and frozen on the chickens. Still no eggs in sight.

- The dog's management has been completely revised, it is no longer physically bugged/disjointed in doors and under small roofs, it no longer disappears in any case for me, the stats are however fixed and it is not necessary to feed it as before and it is never injured as was planned.

- The red rainwater tank is working again.

- Protecting items from the rain with the raincoat works again from what I've seen.

- The game is much more optimized than when 0.6.0 was released, even if there is still a lot of work to be done in certain areas - BRI, a large bandit camp where their white house appears on the screen almost immediately when you are in front of entry of the camp, zone 1...

- The game takes much less time to load than it did when version 0.6.0 was released.

- The unexpected vehicle rollover seems to be fixed, some people still complain about it, but seeing some streams or reading some posts, I think that many people drive without looking at the speedometer : try driving over a rock as big as your head at very high speed in real life, I think it's just realistic... In any case, the jack system works again when it happens.

- The system for recovering metal or other things, and things that can or cannot break, has been clarified a little, but there is still some work to be done: missing icons, breakages or non-breakages that do not comply with the new rule.

- The return of friendly NPCs, but there are some bugs that prevent access to certain quests or content. You either have to reload the game, or completely reinstall all or part of the game, or sometimes it's completely blocked, like for Scott once his camp is built.

- The creation of a real quest system. These are not very advanced or particularly interesting, but they have the merit of existing. However, it will be necessary to correct those that are buggy in one way or another, as explained previously.

- A campfire cooking system that works again, although it's unfortunate that there's one item missing that can't be grown: broccoli. It's available on bandits or infected, but not all the time, so it's a shame.

- Crops have expanded. We can grow potatoes and carrots, but still no broccoli, as I just mentioned.

- Fixing many bugs, even if many still need to be fixed, this had never been so important before 0.6. Personally, apart from the big quest and/or NPC bugs, I have only seen other very small bugs, very very numerous certainly, but which do not block the game (texture bug, annotations, etc...). No doubt that this is not everyone's experience, but we must also distinguish the bugs of corrupted games, from the real gaps in the game which also exist.

4/ Rather negative points :

- world generation poses a real problem today in terms of the spawning of existing or deleted, broken, moved objects, and the vision of these which is altered in terms of their appearance or disappearance on the screen, or objects which fall under the map, etc...

- the difficulty of the bandits: either very complicated to kill or very easy to kill, either because of their physique or because of their robotic behavior. It has always been more or less like this in all versions.

- Some weapons that are too powerful in solo, and which make the game too easy at times.

- An almost daily mist for me, maybe it would be better if it were less frequent and we could no longer sleep, because in fact everyone goes through these stages because in the long run it is too painful to wait (when we have no interest in killing them) and the game no longer has the flavor of other times.

- too much loot for most items, too much free food that makes the game too easy, not enough scrap metal and cars/metal objects to break like barbecues and wheelbarrows that have become unbreakable (just 50% more would be nice), not enough ores to make steel and too much ores to make bullets, which are found in large quantities very easily. Just the cal50 is a bit lacking but you can't make it anyway, i think.

- generally speaking, a lot of things that have evolved 90/95% but which seem not to want to finish completely: crops, BRI, chicken coop, dog, object modifications, etc...

- the layout of objects and loot on the map in relation to the character's different spawn points is not ideal. For example, the sledgehammer is found very late in the discovery of the map and it is impossible to break metal objects at the beginning of the game since you can no longer do so with the axe. I am of course speaking from the perspective of new players or players who do not know by heart where to find things on the map.

- A complication in development to add repetitive elements such as the second vendor camp in zone 0, which doesn't add much, and it would have been much simpler to do things differently to give us new crafts, for example.

- Zone 1 is very disappointing in my opinion, with poorly designed roads and paths, cannibals that don't add much to the game compared to bandits, a useless monster that is impossible to kill and a bit “laughable” to me, like in the Sharknado movies, an ambition that seems difficult to achieve for a single developer... Even if all this is WIP, it raises a lot of concerns and brings back memories of what happened with version 0.5 and the ambitions that ultimately didn't come to fruition, so I say be careful...

- Some in-game “rewards” are not commensurate with the gameplay and difficulty of certain POIs or monsters to kill (and the time spent, sometimes after several deaths), as once you've finished the BRI, you get a lot of things you already have because the game is already very full, too full...

- There are far too many animations in the patch notes showing new content and new mechanics that seem to work but are never implemented in the end. Or, when you look at the BRI of the different notes and the existing BRI, there is no comparison between the exterior and interior; it should be twice as big.

Here are the overall positive and negative points that come to mind. Of course, it's impossible to list everything, as there have been many changes in a year and a half, and many new developments too... and on the one hand, we know that the game remains very rough and not unfinished...

5/ Conclusion :

Due to the various corrections made to the game compared to the previous version 0.5, we found it to be generally playable and enjoyable, even if it takes time to get around/learn how to play certain problems and everything is far from perfect, logic or even intuitive.

Based on my gameplay experience, I would say that returning to map 0.4 and the basic gameplay that made the game so successful at this time, has been directly or indirectly beneficial to version 0.6. Let's hope that this is also the case for the co-op version, although I'm afraid we may be in for some unpleasant surprises. But perhaps starting some things from scratch is sometimes useful and beneficial to the game, at least for a while...

In fact, the more this version expands, the more I find that the development is going in all directions and has ambitions that are difficult to maintain, which has caused major problems in the past. At the same time, it's hard to understand why most of the game mechanics today aren't 100% functional, as if we were being denied the entire game before 1.0, and I'm not talking about the WIP.

It should be noted that also under (good) pressure, the Dev has abandoned the idea of not dealing with most of the bugs and delivering versions that are far from playable.
This can obviously change radically when you know the history of the game.

All we can do is either move on if we don't like the state of the game, which is completely understandable, or push for the overall positive work to continue, even helping out for a while. There's no doubt that there are many aspects of the game that make it seem like things aren't looking good, but everyone has their own sensibilities and limits.

4/ Suggestions for the developpment :

- Stop showing upcoming content until you are certain you can code and implement it.
- Continue to streamline the game to make it even more optimised and memory-efficient, for example by removing trees from paths and roads (given the lore, not enough time has passed for this to happen), removing certain tall grasses that resemble seaweed and add nothing to the terrain, removing all cars that no longer break down and replacing them with real scenery rather than having ghost wheels appearing everywhere when travelling and which take probably some graphic memory for nothing, etc.
- Communicate better about your short- and long-term ambitions and stop making promises about dates or deadlines.
- Hire a good coder or someone capable of finalising/polishing things
- Surround yourself with more moderators on Steam. There are too many toxic people who are only banned for a short time. You need to ban disrespect and intolerance towards people more severely, rather than just towards the game, and I must say that moderation is not always active.
- Create sub-sections on the Steam forum for solo and co-op versions to differentiate between them, and archive everything that can/should be archived, including old photos or trailers from the store page. It is becoming too complicated to explain certain things that no longer exist or that have evolved.
- Stop being overly ambitious or trying to resemble other games (in terms of form), or else increase the price of the game and find the means to achieve these ambitions.
- Avoid repeating the mistakes of version 0.5 by rushing things too much.
- Remove the dev console in the near future or hide access to it from everyone. Too many people are using it today and have become accustomed to it. Approximately 100 to 200 players play the game, but not even 10 players regularly report bugs. This is not enough; we need to get into the habit of making changes in a much more general way. If necessary, create buttons that work for the most important debugging tasks.
- Add, when the game is released modified for co-op, the current version/build available and playable in the launch beta versions.
.....

Everyone knows that you do things your own way without listening too much to the most sensible advice, but rather to those who speak loudly, such as those who want co-op, for example, but there you go, that's that. I don't claim to be an expert on the game, or to know everything, it's just what I think and you can take it or leave it, it's not my game ^^

Respectfully.
