I'm a little confused at what you mean by "I can get past the first 3 steps". There's only one thing to figure out.

Did you see the model on the desk right as you walk in the door? It tells you exactly what you need to do.

Starting at the door and facing toward the model on the desk, walk left 3 spaces, then walk right until you're 3 spaces to the right of the door, left until you're 1 space left of the door, right until you're 4 spaces right of the door, then go left until you get to the next area.

Each "space" has another model that shows you your position relative to the door. If you pay attention to those models, the piece will tilt left or right showing you that you need to change directions (so you don't even have to memorize how many steps you need to take).

I just want units to go where I tell them. Half the time they just stop half way or turn around for some reason. Every other RTS I've played attack-move means that even if they attack something they will still move to where I told them to.

There's a setting for that.
