Horseback riding does involve risks, and fatalities do occur... around 100 horse riding deaths annually in the USA, head injuries are the most common reason... some research may be needed, but perhaps protective hat could improve the survival chances. HTH ^.^

Fully salvaging a ship for parts would take forever. Even trying to salvage a single thing (weapon, system, etc...) could involve a lot more work than you've got time for. So all you can do is quickly grab anything useful that's not nailed down and move on. It's why in rare instances you get a choice in reward, but you only have time to grab one of them.
