I kind of inverted the issue: I made all elemental/status/weird tech loadouts for a single weapon type, so now I have a nearly perfected greatsword build for every occasion but no drive to learn other weapon types this deep in because I know it would eventually mean grinding all over again to make builds for them too.

Though that saying "Fear the warrior who has practiced one strike one-thousand times" comes to mind.

Grind-wise, it would be real nice if they just streamlined the weapon and armor system. "Oh, you crafted the entire Arkveld tree in a weapon line? Okay, here are all the Arkveld weapons to save you hours of time. And I see you crafted the full masculine-presenting Beta set of this armor? Okay, here are the rest of the pieces on both versions of Alpha and Beta." A whole lot of the game is just straight up padding to make you spend more time playing against monsters you've literally hunted dozens of times already if you really want to have everything; this discourages trying new things because then it means even more grinding.

I know many folks absolutely love all that, but a forge checklist to me quickly becomes a forge chorelist.

DoW 2 was good. But I think if they want to mix they have to separate missions with the "conquest mode" and "kill team mode"

To me, the benefit is something like "I want to play Norse India or Han England, but without Ruler Designer". So you pick up your pieces, walk across the map occasionally stopping for a contract or something, and work your way over. It's much easier than conquering and giving away land to "hop" over or a Varangian Adventure.
