Because the original made it optional? And what if I want to mess around with whatever?

There isn't an option to disable it, but first time to heard you can do it in Original. How does it work? Just bring the weapon and automatically unlock it?

sword and board can be very effective, but it's much harder to use. like dog mentioned, heavy melee is generally better, though sword and board can output i think slightly more damage, but only if you use defense strip to its fullest (stomp and taunt).

Just downloaded the demo and played the tutorial. Killed one little crawler guy and got swarmed by ten more. Made actually looking through to scavenge the killed enemies a pain in the butt. Is this pretty much just how the game is most of the time?

have two lists:

maps = ["allpine", "mesa"]

maps_done = []

when a map is randonly chosen it goes to maps_done and won't be chosen again. when maps_done == maps you empty the maps_done. this way you won't repeat maps until every map had a chance

It was really annoying. I finally eliminated all the enemies, but I didn't play according to the guide. The character was stuck and couldn't move or turn around. I cut down all the trees around, but it was still stuck.

Have you tried deleting all files, especially the user profile and settings under this directory, C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\MGSDelta\Saved\SaveGames\[ID]

You might want to disable Steam Cloud first, otherwise it will keep restoring the corrupted files.

I have over 40,000 essence after playing 135 hours. I'd say get gold equipment if you want to farm essences my way then on one area to shovel 36 squares, hoe 36 squares, plant seeds 36, water 36 squares do this repeatedly on the same spot. Seeds you have planted will be picked up by your shovel you'll get plenty of essences this way in a day. Helps if you have a good source of stamina food with the buff stamina regen and tools that save stamina. Get perks that help with stamina on tools also with getting extra resources like seeds, stone and wood while hoeing. I'd suggest an expensive seed so you get some money out of it too.
