The main reason is the team got changed and completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the original community. Theres a large "political" reason for not playing now.
Besides that the core of the game is entirely different. It tried to mimic a looter shooter or extraction shooter. Using very few maps which or partially random.
This game is focused on linear maps and an overwhelming zombie force in the way.

Is the freezing you running out of VRAM?

so after i edit my corvette for awhile the game freezes then fades to black and steam says its updating but it keeps doing it
i have verified files
i have also updated steam
does anyone else have this issue or a fix?

But one thing I noticed early on is especially like Apotheosis City looks pretty much on the same level as Praetoria in City of Heroes, graphics-wise.

It's a complicated subject for me to speak on in an honest, non-trolling way because IMO good graphics and good art direction are not the same thing. City of Heroes' art lead under Paragon Studios is now a bigtime Marvel artist, even before CoH he had worked on higher-tier indie titles like Witchblade. Unapologetically, I don't give even a moment's consideration to anyone who questions the amount of talent behind that game. Conversely I don't know who was in charge of Apotheosis City. It was probably not that caliber.

I'm curious to find out how I feel about it close up and actually in the game, rather than limited screenshots and videos.

On a technical level, the graphics are better. Hands down in Ship of Heroes.
Aesthetics though are bad.

Overuse of Materials, clashing colors, just bad art.

But so long as the gameplay is good its easy to look past that.

Can't be helped since you were wrong, but at least you tried and your advice was what would be considered normally reasonable.

It is just a very odd situation that the GTX 16xx series supports the hardware feature Mesh Shaders that is required while GPUs like RTX 1080 Ti do not. Ironically, GTX 16xx lacks other required features to finish meeting qualifications for DirectX 12 Ultimate so it can't just install automatically and needs this unusual work around.

Unfortunately, that file is totally required. That is why it will not boot properly and produce the DX12 is not supported on your system error.

Normally, on supported GPUs it would get installed automatically as they would support DX12 Ultimate. Since your GPU does not meet the requirements, missing some hardware support but having unutilized Mesh Shader support, you can bootleg work around to get it to work. Sadly, this will not fly for other DirectX 12 features your GPU lacks support for so, as HXDave recommends, I would definitely try to upgrade your GPU in the near future if possible as yours is pretty dated. Upscaling can only do so much to help you pass muster, not to mention cases where it will not launch due to lacking the required hardware support.

That link in the guide to Google Drive has the file you need. When you open it in the top right you can click download. You might be able to find it elsewhere if you don't trust that link, but you would have to do the searching for yourself on that one.

That easy and, as you can see from the video and also that guide's comments/awards it is known to work well.

That said, your GPU isn't very strong and I heard some complaints about the upscaling options aside from DLSS so that is why I mentioned Lossless Scaling which might help you. There might be another mod that is free on NexusMod or somewhere else that might work too, but I haven't really tested the other upscaling options, myself, or looked at other solutions as I have a RTX 4090 and didn't really need it. I just know of the fix due to seeing it mentioned prior at the game's release.

We're mostly inspired by turn-based late-SNES and early-PS1 era JRPGs, and while there were SO many amazing games made during this time window, we can only draw inspiration from so many.
