A Chain Lightning build is exactly what I did for my first completed play-through. Note that this was on normal, so Expert players may advise something else.

I am not a meta guy, I just went for it after a first play through that I stopped half-way some six or seven years ago, where I fiddled with different spells. I liked Chain Lightning specifically because it's easy to use and pretty brainless all things considered.

If you're going for it, you can mostly ignore all other Attack Skills as Chain Lightning is enough to do decent damage. The other commenter is correct that the final boss took some time, probably about 20mins for me to defeat on my first try, so you can try mixing and maxing.

However, for me, the only skills besides Chain Lightning I invested in was Reaper's Scythe and the Cloud Summon, which helps with single-target damage and having a passive fighter respectively. The latter is good because the rest of my build went into Utility Skills, namely the Barrier, Teleport, and Cast Buffs. I normally only used the Summon for boss fights, for grinding keep the EP for casting Lightning.

Equipment and Talent wise I went for anything that increased MaxEP, EPRate, Magic Attack, and Potion Refill. Eventually you'll run out of Talents that care about those things so MaxHP and other generic good stuff is fine.

I, again, didn't use a guide except for some very last minute puzzles so I just used whatever equipment I could get my hands on.

So the crux of the build is be defensive and spam lightning from a distance.

Potions you can try what you want - I don't want to spoil end game potions but the last potion you unlocked, plus Purple and Red for bosses was my setup. Swap one for Brown when grinding.
