Prey physical used a CD key to install from disc.
Triton was an actual store.
Bethesda didn't buy the publishing rights to Prey 2006. Just the rights to publish Prey 2.
Yes, I'm still not sure how it is related.

Yes, Triton (Game xStream) was an actual digital delivery store, where did I state that Triton was not a real thing? I asked how Triton is related to the *NO Prey (2006) Steam keys* situation, after the game was moved to Steam.

Bethesda bought the rights to franchise IP, publishing is not possible without the licence agreement, that's what I posted:
Messaggio originale di Cadaver747:
Bethesda / ZeniMax acquired the rights to the Prey franchise in September 2009.

Speculation suggests that a finite number of CD keys were issued both for physical copies and digital distribution specifically for the PC market through Triton (Game xStream) digital store, and that exact (or close to it) same limited amount of keys was later transferred to Steam for further distribution after Triton's demise. This seems logical, but it raises the question: how come 2K Games, the publisher, and Valve (Steam) couldn't resolve this situation? My take is that it's Bethesda's doing. 2K Games had the rights to publish Prey (2006) and possibly the rights to the game's code IP, yet without a license from the franchise IP holder, one can't sell anything - unless there's a very long-standing publishing agreement (e.g., Interplay's publishing rights for Descent games, or id Software's publishing rights for Heretic/Hexen up to the Mission Pack for Hexen 2).

If it's the case, that Valve just couldn't handle more keys generation, which they normally do - fine. Yet something tells me that it could have been resolved but only with the additional agreement between 2K Games and Bethesda.

In both cases you're right, most probably it was caused by Triton's finite amount of keys, officially documented and sealed legally before 3D Realms transferred the rights to IP franchise to Bethesda through Radar Group.

Finally, thank you! So I can see that XBOX Store still offers Prey (2006) for sale, with 2K Games as publisher, and for only $20.

So yeah, 3D Realms and Triton f@cked up the keys situation for PC market, and XBOX wasn't affected (standalone agreement for different distribution model).

It confirms that 2K Games still retains the exclusive publishing rights for Prey (2006), and they would have sold it on Steam as well if not for the aforementioned 3D Realms - Triton situation.

I still believe that Take Two / 2K Games CEO just can't bring themselves to the idea of begging Bethesda for an additional agreement to issue more keys for PC, without artificial limit set by Triton. Or maybe they did actually and Bethesda refused them any satisfaction out of spite.

But if it makes you feel better - you win, you were right. There is no point to continue on. You moved me, let's move on.
