Why isn't CachyOS more popular?

I disagree that Sid id more stable than Nobara. I have been using Nobara for more than a year and have done 3 very easy major version upgrades 39->40, 40->41, 41->42. It really just depends on what someone is comfortable with.

I am a Software Engineer and have been releasing official CentOS packages since 2004. I understand RPM based distributions, so my Linux will always be RPM based.

But, the actual major Linux binaries, whether Arch, Debian, SUSE, Ubuntu or Red Hat based are all ultimately based on similar versions of upstream (to them) open source projects. The only REAL difference is how aggressively/quickly they schedule and pull down upstream code .. or if (like the LTS, Enterprise versions) they backport patches into existing versions.

For gaming, you want to be on newer code from upstream because you want the new hardware benefits, you want the new Proton / Wine benefits, etc.

But most of the new trendy game distributions (CachyOS, Bazzite, Nobara, Endeavor OS, etc) are very similar. They all run the latest Steam. They all use Wayland. They all use newer kernels and wine and include Steam out of the box, etc.

Sid is also very 'current', obviously .. its purpose is to pull in new upstream content to add to Debian released software. It is going to have all the new things as well. nothing wrong with it at all.

So it really just boils down to .. what are you most comfortable with for managing updates and troubleshooting. If you like APT .. then use something Debian based .. if you would rather use DNF .. then something RPM based. Or if you like Arch's approach .. CachyOS is significantly easier than standard Arch, etc.

But they are all great and they are all easy to maintain and all fairly stable.

In the year I have been on Nobara 39, 40, 41, 42 .. there has not been a day that I could not boot the machine and launch Steam to play games.

I agree with you on basically everything except for one thing.
"I disagree that Sid id more stable than Nobara."
You wrote that you have been using Nobara for a long time. But you didn't say how long you used the Sid.

Maybe instead of thinking he wrote that the Nobara is unstable. You should think, this Sid must be damn stable, especially considering something called unstable. :p2chell:
