So, tried doing a run without collecting chests. (Spoilers)

Mostly to see how the results would be collecting them all at the end, but also to see how the game plays with effectively a min% run.

Going with 1hp wasn't actually that bad.

Minimum damage and slow attacks can be annoying, but you can boost your damage by alternating chucking a D4, dashing and hitting with the toothpick, since each stun. Then just one more attack and an act 1 monster is done.

Using the D4 to tap at the back of the boat is faster than the base blower.

You do need to route to coins a bit just for the traversal items, like the toothpin ability, but smashing generators without fighting enemies and just grabbing the coins will get you most of that.

Dying/respawning can warp you nicely in places, but I'm playing too casual to really speedrun here.

Went into garden, up fork, along popsicle sticks, up to cushions, toothpin up to area with paint bottles, dash to the prominent cube in the castle wall, dash to the burnable cardboard, then into the castle.

Get called out by puzzle police, get a bunch of achievements at once, then the rest is normal.

Then I went around gathering chests... and found that waiting to collect them after getting all the items seems to have makes an odd difference.

After gathering all the chests, I got a much larger % of critical up upgrades, and much less of anything else. After getting 100% of available chests (0 left, except 1 left in town for getting the sponge suit, which is a known issue for now), I ended up with ZERO dash cooldown upgrades (just starting slow dashes), only 7+0/4 HP! Hard to tell the rest, but again - almost all the upgrades were critical up, and mostly for toothpick.

Maybe I was just extremely unlucky - but I may try that run again.

But it definitely seems like there's a pool of items you can get from chests that gets weighed against you when you have more tools, at least in the first act. But this is a very limited sample size (I'm only comparing against my 2 previous 'normal' runs in base and then beta builds). I'm guessing everything will average out across 3/3 acts, just wanted to see how the randomness played out worst case.

Run took just under 4 hours to get to 100%.

I think the party interacts and talks like a bunch of D&D-players sitting around a 21st century tabletop. It almost shades into Knights of Pen & Paper territory at times. It doesn't really work to immerse you into the world, but it does have a certain charm.

I'm pretty sure this is the intended vibe. And I'm all for it.

I have asked Devs to avoid woke story in the game, however I don't see in S1 modern barista talk. I doubt we will find what you describe in S2. I suggest to wait patiently and review after Early Access launches.

If you don't want "woke" don't bother playing D&D. It's inherently woke, and has been becoming increasingly for some time.
- Elves, dwarfs, and other races working together for the common good = Diversity and inclusion.
- Characters like Drizzt Do'Urden or a Paladin Half-Orc = challenging stereotypes, people choosing their identity for themselves
- Barbarian woman = Barbarian man = gender equality
- Warforged (Eberron setting) are people created without identity except what their owners gave them = allegory for slavery and how black slaves actually believed with their very being their circumstances were their fated place in life. The kind of real history American exceptionalism propaganda doesn't want you to know about.

And depending on your GM, they may provide opportunities for:
- Non-violent solutions to problems
- Rehabilitation for villainous characters
- Moral nuance which allows for "evil" characters or races to gain complexity and depth, as opposed to binary established "good or evil."
- Thwarting corrupt kings or gods who abuse their power and influence is the blatant rejection of authority and class privilege. These ideas are echos of classic stories, like Robin Hood.
