Hello, I'm the fella that makes all the textures in the game. Lemme clear some things up for you. I wish to make it very very clear that no AI is used at any point in the game. The textures are a combination of using a mix of photo sourced textures and hand drawn elements to achieve the comic look. What I do is take elements from different photo-sources and mash them together using Photoshop and apply different filters such as the cutout filter to get a chunky 2d look. Many textures come from traced over elements of photos I've taken, stock photos, or free texture websites.

As for the random signage on the radio. I simply put random numbers and words on it because I'm not a radio technician, I have no idea what words or phrases mean. And the reason the bookshelf or other textures may look kinda smudgy is because when I apply a cutout filter to a texture it has a tendency to remove some of the line work and details and reduces the amount of colors.

As for the process of sprites, most of the animations are rotoscoped over photographs frame by frame, such as the finishers, weapons animations etc. And the older enemy animations were created by recording footage of free Mixamo animations and then using Ebsytnth to generate frames for rotoscoping. Ebsynth is not an AI, it uses example-based synthesis to emulate rotoscoping, it does not however use any kind of AI training data. The most current sprites have been made with simply making 3d models and converting them to 2d images. I hope this clears things up for anyone wondering about how art in the game is made.

AI is for making slop. I use photoshop filters, tracing and photobashing to create things.
thank you for the explanation. honestly it's really interesting to learn about, especially since I myself do game development. I do think the more 3D-ish look the game is heading towards actually looks much nicer than before. can't wait for chapter 2 and onward!!! :D
