I'm focusing on Star System Survival, not one of the other premade worlds.
This is a key choice. Star System is a very generic "everything" map, not tuned for one person's specific taste.

I'm looking for a curated challenge, not an easier game. I do want to know that the challenge is curated and balanced so as to be winnable.
What is "winnable" with a game with no defined end? Serious question - I find that statement confusing. If you want a scenario with a defined end, play a scenario. There are many in the workshop if you don't like the ones that come with the game.

Also, if a challenge is too great, improve your means before attempting it. All games are like this. You don't go into the Obelisk boss-fights in ARK with a gang of dilos (maybe a squadron of Dimorphodons if you spent months breeding them to literally killer stats... 😉). You shouldn't go after the Factorum with light armor either (in an earlier thread, a guy was complaining that the Factorum beat his small-grid fighter... :sefacepalm:).

Generally, I prefer the defaults, but the higher difficulty settings are also to be considered and Q&A tested (Realistic Refinery Speed, Meteors, Wolves and Spiders, etc.).
Maybe I've completely ignored them all this time, but where do you find a general difficulty setting? I always tweak the game how I want it, but have never started with any difficulty setting.

If the users need to manually adjust settings to curate the challenges, then those settings need to be documented (e.g. the common "disable wolves, spiders, and meteors.).
You don't need to disable wolves, spiders, or meteors, as they are not enabled by default.
You need to refrain from enabling them. Why would that need to be documented?

That is a planetary build. I'm trying to build in space. Earth is an easy start, space is a harder start. I've already done the Earth start.
I couldn't disagree more with this. The first dozen or so times I started new games, they were on Earthlike (in the Star System map) because the spawn screen (and wikis) said it was "Easy". Then I tried Mars, which is supposed to be harder. Mars is a breeze compared to Earthlike! Lower gravity so still have enough atmosphere for primitive fliers, never even have to dig into the ground because surface-nodes are plentiful, etc., can drive rovers from trading station to trading station, easy.
Then I tried a Space Pod start. That ship is so well equipped for a start it felt like cheating. All you need is ice to not have to respawn, the rest is cake. The only start that compares is the Moon, but only if you luck out and spawn very close to one of the poles so have plenty of ice. Rovers are a royal pain on the Moon though, so I still say Space Pod is the easiest start.

Now, as of 1.206, there is added difficulty of encounters actively raiding your base in space.
Yeah, it's no longer a "progress entirely on your own until you start a fight" game, it's now a "keep your wits about you while you progress" game. I'd say that's a huge improvement (and I'm the last person to play an FPS, I don't even use most MES mods, have zero use for them now that the planetary derelicts is obsolete).

Once in hundreds of hours I got a R.U.S.T. Freighter base raid. It was comical. I had time to build turrets before noticeable damage was done, and nearly any vessel I had could dispatch the aggressor. There was no PvE difficulty in a space start, it was mostly oxygen management.
I've never heard of such a thing... a R.U.S.T. Freighter attacked your base?!?
I've gone after them countless times as they're the easiest SPRT cargo ship to take (approach low and in front, it's a blind-spot) and you can make quite a nice ship out of it. It's amazing for a suit-only start, one of the best finds before they added the UNKN faction recently.

Now there is a scripted shakedown drone encounter, which resulted in my space station almost if not actually being destroyed, and my ship was heavily damaged and required repair. This was repeated not long after with a random FCIF Military encounter.
The military ships are definitely tough... you either have to evade them (by running or going deep into an asteroid) or you outgun them.
The Shakedown Drone though? Just hydroman up on the port side, swing around behind on the starboard side, grind down the turret and if you remembered to bring enough parts for a helm, you got yourself a nice H2 powered small grid ship (or some fuel to bring back if you don't like small-grid). Just remember to wait past the 2nd warning when it moves closer lest you anger its boss. If you think the Shakedown Drone is hard, you will not be a match for the ship that spawns it.

I will have to build a ship before a station. This is an inversion of the planetary start routine where you effectively have to establish a station due to the "Large Grid" and "Wind Turbines".
Of course, but that's mainly because you need to map out all the ores, and that's been the case for a very, very long time (since they changed the ore-generation algorithm, way before I started playing). Unless you're doing a suit-only start, you don't have to build a ship as you started in one. Just keep expanding until it doesn't make sense to do so anymore... by that time, you should have enough materials to not only build a nice ship, but arm it to the teeth.

The difficulty of PvE in 1.206 has changed DRAMATICALLY, and 1.207 "Apex Survival" looks to increase the difficulty further with environmental hazards.
Yes, 1.206 is awesome, and 1.207 looks to make it even better. :cozyspaceengineersc:
But keep in mind, you are the one ticking those checkboxes.
They already stated that the survival aspects being added in 1.207 will be optional.
If you don't like the idea, don't tick the checkbox. Same goes for spiders, wolves, and meteors.
