Future Proof Steam: Add Censorship-Resistant Payment Methods

Solution: Valve should find crypto payment processor that will deal with user support and occasional fraud issues and just send bulk payments to valve over traditional banking system. If successful, this might finally result in Visa/MasterCard losing their duopolistic position, which would benefit everyone.

Fraud management is definitely a critical point, and it’s worth remembering that fraud and refund systems end up overlapping a lot in practice, since both involve reversing or disputing payments. Traditional card rails handle this through forced chargebacks, which is convenient but also part of why they wield so much leverage over merchants like Valve.

With DeFi, that mechanism doesn’t exist by default, which sounds like a flaw, but it actually just shifts the responsibility. Instead of Visa or MasterCard unilaterally clawing funds back, Steam itself can decide how to handle fraud disputes and refunds. That means the user experience (fraud protection, refund eligibility) can stay exactly the same, while Valve avoids being bound by an outside arbiter.

Where I think your suggestion hits the mark is that many users will want a processor layer in between, not because it’s technically required, but because it centralizes the hassle of disputes, fraud detection, and customer service. And you’re right: if that takes off, it could chip away at Visa/MasterCard’s duopoly by forcing them to compete with crypto-native processors instead of being the only option.

So fraud isn’t an unsolvable weakness here, it’s more about how Valve wants to design its support system. Crypto rails wouldn’t stop Steam from offering the same refund/fraud guarantees it already does, but they would give Valve the autonomy to enforce them on its own terms, rather than having them dictated by card networks.
