The long answer: You can customize your appearance in so far as what armors you wear and what items you hold in your hands. You cannot modify the physical appearance of the character models though.

The short answer: No, nor did Grounded, nor is it necessary to play the game and enjoy the story.

problem is i had all the special achievements but since the update those special achievements are now for me to do all over again

For anyone wondering how you could possibly get that arrow block, the mechanic is getting a shadow block on the tile above the wooden block, having a clone push the wooden block on top of it, and materializing it to break the wooden block

A lot of the new puzzles are really long fiddly sequences. I'm not sure you're gonna get Aliensrock to willingly complete it at this rate :P
