The love hate cycle

So there is this thing in the civ community that I think is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, people keep bringing up this idea that people grow to love the old game then when a new one comes out everyone hates it and over time repeats the cycle again to loving it until another new game comes out.

I think this is an illusion, much like the "people never finish their games" illusion. Now notice I said "Illusion" not "myth" because both events do occur a lot but not in the way everyone thinks, like a magic trick, the eyes see and the ears hear but something else is happening I think.

1 - "people don't finish civ games" true, but the bigger truth is most people don't finish most long form games

2 - "people always hate the new civ until its updated then they love it, repeat"
Also true, but again not in the way people think. Most new games are rocky and invite comparison to the last one which is often fully updated in any franchise, same thing with movies some times. Whats happening is people offer their views on what they think is an issue, and that's always going to be at the start of a new release of any game, some people freak out and make it seem like everyone hates it and others pre-order for bonuses but don't play at launch because they want a couple of patches first which drives down player numbers vs purchases.

So you see loud complaints mixed with normal feed back mixed with lower then expected player numbers and it causes this image of everyone hating it when really its doing fine and on track with updates like any other game.

I think that this hate to love thing is really held up by common player behaviours at launch in any game and people thinking that while they don't do it themselves others do.

I'm interested to see if this is true, if anyone else is interested say how you felt about each game as they came out and how you felt at the end.

For me it would be:

civ 1/2 played when they where both already out, liked them both, especially 2
civ 3 - loved it when it came out and at the end
civ 4 - loved it when it came out but was sad that the leaders didn't change how they dressed with time any more, very impressed with the "round world" thing that game did
civ 5 - liked it when it came out, first time I had bug issues though, loved it later
civ 6 - hated it when it came out due to how it looks, came to like it more later but never really got over its grapics
civ 7 - liked it at first, came to understand how shallow it is, how much the era system ruins the feeling of the game, ended up hating it but wanting to love it.

so for me it was like

love - love
love - love
like - love
hate - ok with
liked - hated (this one may still become loved later, who knows)

Over all I think that civ 7 is the first game to have real issues at launch and people are trying to fit it into this cycle idea but I'm not sure its even happening based on my own experience with civ, what do you guys think?
