The Version Number

The version number is not intended to predict how close the game is to a 1.0. It is just a numbering system selected to differentiate between builds. Having the version number dictate or predict the 1.0 would mean there would be some set script that developers follow, and have everything planned beforehand.

That may be for some games and developers, as they have decided to follow their design document ahead of time. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't really allow for any free development based on player feedback, which is our style. As you mentioned it is a creative process and thus we selected a numbering system that allows for basically infinite differentiation of builds of the game, without the numbers being "1.0.x".

And to be fair, with a logic of the version number predicting 1.0 the jump could have already been done when it hit 0.10 - 10 major updates ago. =)

Why it Takes Long

Keep in mind Space Haven is our first colony sim game ever. When we released the game on Steam we were flooded with new information and feedback. Looking at it now, the bar for colony sim games is set really high by other great games. We misjudged the amount of work needed to tweak and modify our plans. We simply did not know.

We've had to do a ton of work outside of just new features. Continuous tweaking and modification of balance based on feedback from players, new facilities and entirely new major updates never thought of before the early access release. I would say there's been at least as much work done on this new information/feedback gathered as on features we had listed as features we want in the game.

A good example of that is the latest Major Update that was something we had in the plans before release, but as the feedback of a considerable subset of players wanting a goal in the game we decided to implement the storyline with scripted missions.

The development time estimation before Early Access release was way off. No denying that, we thought new features would be a faster process but it really takes a long time to develop something new and try to make it work with the existing systems in the game and also have it be of value to players.

Station Mode

We're actually working on station mode right now, it's coming up in the next Major Update. Will post an update on that as we get it far enough to show new stuff.

As for people shrugging development time estimates off I don't think that has been the case. Not from our perspective. Been seeing threads on it continuously throughout the development, which is fair enough. =)
