Okay, so the answer is 'it depends', but also 'I know exactly which sword you are talking about, so I can answer more specifically in this instance'.

Here's the thing. It says 'on hit', not 'actively use and hit', which simplifies things enormously. So this sword will work with things like, say, Warpath in the way you'd expect, every single hit Warpath connects with will proc independently. This is different from, say, Healing Touch's proc nodes which states 'actively uses and hits', which does NOT function with Warpath as you'd want, because Warpath is being channeled, so you're only actively using it once, then holding it down continues that first active use, no matter how many times it hits something, so the healing touch proc only works on the first hit of a Warpath use.

Any time a skill says it will proc another skill with a skill tree, it uses that skill tree. So yes, it will use the Smite skill tree when it procs smites. So if you have a bunch of ignite chance stacked in your smite tree, that will apply to the smites raining down from spinning and winning.

However, a proc usually cannot also itself proc because usually proc passive nodes say 'actively use', and a proc isn't an 'active' use. So for example if you had the proc node in the Healing Hands tree to proc off of an active use of Smite, that won't trigger on any smites being cast from your sword's procs, because those aren't 'active' uses of the smite skill. You would have to physically push a button assigned to Smite to get that to trigger.

So, tl;dr:

* Will the 'cast on hit' affect from your sword use the smite skill tree? YES

* Are there any limitations besides 'self cast' nodes? It will use the entire skill tree of the proc'd skill, including any modifiers, unless the node specifically says 'actively used' in its conditions.

* Will a smite proc'd from the sword trigger casting other skills? Usually not, because it will usually say 'actively used' as a condition to proc, and you aren't actively using in this instance. It isn't 'it will never trigger from a trigger', so much as 'the devs fixed this by making all proc-this-skill require you to actively use the skill to proc, that I am aware of'.
