In reality, depth charges had a few hundred meters of range for severe or fatal damage.

No, they didnt. The range for severe or fatal damage was just a few meters.

What you are most likely referring to is the estimated radius for the pressure hull to imminently crack wide open and thus an instant loss of the boat. This happened f.e. in a test on a Typ IX: "a 250-pound (110 kg) MK.6 depth charge was detonated 30 feet (9.1 m) from U-1105 [...] her pressure hull cracked open by the explosion all the way around to the keel".

You might deduct from that description, that the kill zone of an submerged boat was bigger than "just a few meters" as you did not necessarily had to cause an open crack all around the keel to sink a submarine. The pressure hull on this multi hull boats was pretty substantial and resistent, even to shock. However, the pressure hull of a submarine was not a solid smooth block of steel. It had a lot of pipes, valves, seals, movable parts etc. and those things were much less resistant and the first points of failure if hit by an explosive shock. Apart from that, there were also a lot of (pressurized) devices inside of the boat bolted to the hull which would be influenced by the enormous shock. It is like your are sitting inside a bell, struck by a huge hammer. A water bomb exploding a few hundred meters away could crack glass instrument or electric light casings. Some of which already could lead to minor water leakage (the "Papenberg" f.e.) . Close hits at around 100 meters could lead to damaged seals and valves, thus to severe leaks, and with water bombs usually dropped in large quantities, damage would accumulate. That's what I called "severe or even fatal damage". Damage is fatal if it kills you. It is not only fatal, if it kills you instantly. What amounts to fatal damage also depends a lot on how deep the submarine is submerged already. But that's another story, just as how the pressure affects the effect of the depth charges.

There are tables of recorded damage after conducted tests with depth charges at ranges of 300 to 50 meters - but I cannot find them right now. I searched them for half an hour. Maybe someone can help with that. I was very much surprised myself how huge the range for severe damage actually was when I read it the first time as you usually just read the "expected kill radius" which - as you did - refers to completely cracking the hull. This is like saying "the guaranteed (!) kill radius of a hand grenade is 5 meters". It is not untrue. But it might give a false impression. You are definitely not safe, standing 10 meters away from an exploding hand grenade.
