Not really, no. Steam is an echochamber being you cannot really say anything against Steam, Valve or Mr Newell without being brigaded.

It happens to many of us regularly.

If i come out with an OP favorable to Steam, i get only 10 replies. If it's not favorable , i'll get 400 or more replies mostly brigades and white knights for Steam or their Support, many of them breaking our rules.

And what tends to happen is instead of taking action against the numerous rulebreakers, they take it out on the OP or lock the thread, because it's much easier for them.

And so we need a better block feature such as reddit or other venues.

If you are not getting modded or censored by Valve, you are not getting echo chambered. The fact that people are allowed to criticise you or Valve shows Steam isn't an echo chamber.

Hmm, perhaps I was generalizing too much.

Steam's public forums are better in the sense that there is less moderation so we're less likely to get banned for banter. Though the regular self-inserted playground police certainly don't help. Perhaps it's harder to ignore because Steam's forums are much less populated & the places for discussion are extremely limited.

Reddit is better in the sense that there's more spaces for discussion, so users aren't "forced" to be around each other.

However, both (and many online platforms/games) have become havens & echo chambers. That's what happens when you give anonymous people the power to "clean" up speech and little to no recourse of action. I wish there was a middle ground between the days of 4chan (completely unfiltered speech) vs today (automated, heavy-handed, biased and often abuse of moderation privilege). But it seems like either side of the fence, people will always take advantage of the "situation".

One side will abuse the freedoms of speech we have. The other will abuse the report system that is meant to deal with "real" troublemakers and not just people we disagree with.

Yeah I like that Steam is more lax here that banter isn't gonna get you banned if you happen to offend a snowflake. Of course stuff like explicit insults and slurs should get hit and they do. The good overall is that there isn't much need to walk on egg shells on Steam unlike other places like Reddit, GameFAQs or Resetera.

Reddit's (down)voting system also contributes to it being an echo chamber since posts are prioritised or buried based on votes. That also makes it difficult to have a conversation since the default display is not chronological. The voting system does have an upside, as it makes Reddit useful for getting a quick answer for a question, so Reddit has value for that use case, which is probably the most common one as people visit forums generally to get help for a specific issue they are having.

Correcting misinformation and an obvious crusade against moderation isn’t an “echo chamber”.

Some places deserve to have their mods ♥♥♥♥ on, especially if they are biased or are acting as activists. Reddit, GameFAQs, and Resetera come to mind, as they cultivate mod enforced echo chambers, especially since they draw their mods from their userbase. Given how they get their new mods, you often get cultures of mod worship by users hoping to join their ranks and cliques of insiders and outsiders.

Steam moderation seems pretty neutral and given they have outsourced it call center style, the issue of mod favouritism or bias is lessened since the employees are not users and there is more independence and objectivity.

In this case it’s a bit different. There’s a line between voicing criticism and posting blatant misinformation and borderline slander due to having an axe to grind against moderation and former volunteer moderation
