Would the i7 12700k or KF be a noticeable upgrade to i5 12600kf?

Illusion of Progress
I don't think most of those IPC improvements will apply in the case of of the 14400 though. The x400 and below in the 13th and 14th generation are more of rebranded Alder Lake (12th generation). The 14500 and above are where it becomes "proper" Raptor Lake.

Raptor Lake was actually a very good refresh (the issues aside) and its performance increase came largely from two things; increased cache capacity and clock speeds in various places (actually core boosts, ring bus, etc.). Things that the 13400/14400 series won't have over the 12600K/KF.

This is why in some game benchmarks, the 14400 in particular will often lag noticeably behind the rest of the 13th/14th generation options, and even be outperformed by the 12700/12900. It's because it lands where you'd expect a 12600 to land, because that's about what it is.

They're not bad CPUs... but it means there's zero point in moving to them if you already have a 12600 CPU.

IMO, maybe (and I mean maybe) consider a $180 12700KF (would be better at ~$160 like it was at times) and sell the 12600 for, what, ~$100? (I have no idea what used prices for 12600s are.) Then that could mean you made the change for $60 to $80 which... isn't terrible? Like aa previous reply said, that won't be much uplift in most games since it's the same generation, but the two extra performance cores might come in handy in some games. There are games/engines that put a 6/12 CPU to work, and even with the 12600 having 4 e-cores, the 12700KF might bring some benefit. I'd only do it though if you can actually get it cheap.

The better option is moving to something that is currently higher end (don't buy used Raptor Lakes) or waiting until next generation. Alder Lake is still performant.
