What do you find to do before or during the T'Rang and Umpani quests?

In my last few games I also extended this part of the game. First, go to and solve Arnika. Next, clear out Cierdan's tomb. Then, stop by the Umpani but only long enough to buy a flag--it's too early to join up. After this, visit the Trynnie long enough to drink from the fountain. Finally, enter the Swamp and proceed to Lower Marten's Bluff through the Mine Tunnels, finally joining the T'Rang. Since I'm not yet a double-agent, I can take my sweet time traveling back to Mt. Gigas the long way, instead of rushing right back to Arnika to pay off He'Li. At this point, joining the Umpani and doing their first few quests will be a massive XP boost since the T'Rang Arm is already in my inventory.

Specialist casters will definitely have their first portal spells by now, but there's no reason to stop adventuring in the wilds and roads yet. The various Mook alliance quests can be done leisurely.

I guess, I've always played this way... taking my time exploring--filling out the map and finding all hidden loot I can--before going to the 'next' quest point. I usually don't 'shortcut' to anything in the game... including quests. And, I always try to run the quests between T'rang and Umpani for the Neutral path--not siding with one or the other. And, I guess this may take me a little longer, not sure. But, I hadn't really considered the potential for big XP rewards by short-cutting or postponing quests. I also do a 'bit' of grinding some skills / magic although I don't like to spend a 'lot' of time doing it.

A little bit counts (is quite effective in extending the game) and I am not fanatical about it. and the order has varied from game to game, but this time, after finishing Arnika stuff, the first mission was the graveyard first (not doing the retro dungeon at that time) and then return to Arnika and all three of the vendors there. There was no grinding and this time there were lots of Piercer Modai (occasionally with a Sige) as well as bats but by that time, on the way to the Graveyard and the chests and hidden items (on the surface) there, that was the mission.

Next was a mission to the Monastery and back to Arnika and third was a mission to the Umpani Camp, including buying the flag, joining and doing the obstacle (without reload this time). The party that had only touched the around the near edge of the Northern Wilderness went strait for the Arnika Road entrance through the Higardi Bank Robbers.

After that third mission Alchemy was above 50 and most books and other desirable items were picked up before heading to Trynton. Trynton was thoroughly done including the sixth bough enemies but not the breeders (no significant incentive to do them yet and I knew the party had to return there anyway), Rattkin Goons and Snipers remained neutral.

Entering the Swamp with 3 party members at Level 12 and 3 at Level 11 was no joke. The first battle was with a small group of Level 13 Bloodrinkers, the second with a small group of 5 Level 15 Tiger Flies and the third battle, with just the back of the party against a wall, was with a small group of Level 15 Tiger Flies and a large group of Level 13 Bloodrinkers at the same time... whew.

Delaying when these areas is touched does have an impact and increases, on the average, the difficulty of the enemies encountered there.

Along the lines of not being fanatical, in addition to doing the Umpani Obstacle course the party did visit the seventh bough. When they are reached, I also do the quests of both the Umpani and T'Rang, and do not delay doing them, but naturally, as a consequence of the above, reach there at a higher level when 80,000 experience, 160,000 experience, etc., are just not dominant relative to the amount of experience needed for the current level when they are finally reached. The benefit of every level requiring lots of battles is the positive impact on skills pointed out here, a fortuitous side effect :steamhappy:.
