The smaller guns have their uses but you are far more limited in their position. Especially when trying to advance, you often end up having to place your small AA unit and then build the rest of your formation around it.

u can have 3 FlakVierling for 1 8.8. The 3 small ones cover a lot more area than the big one.
Depending on heroes a mix of both is the best way to go late game.
