That's likely your issue, to be honest. A lot of bodies have, for many reasons, rear-engine layouts that really aren't usable.

Do you have any info on any further DLCs?

With the recent update, factions have different personalities and some are more aggressive than others.
I've never seen one with "Pirate" in the name that wasn't SPRT (Space Pirates) faction though.
However, anything with "Military" in the ship's name is something to stay away from if you don't want to be attacked... many will shoot if you just get near. Watch your messages, they will give you warning first. Some are even funny (a couple of the SPRT ones frequently say "Oh please make this interesting!".

15 hours was too generous, I agree. It's more like 10 hours in total.

That said, if you want to play fully, you need to complete the game at least twice (to get all 4 masteries). So, double the number.
