Is there going to be a Just Cause 5 anytime soon.

As I've seen someone saying that Avalanche NY had anything to do with the Just Cause series: they don't. The Montreal studio had nothing to do with it, either

Avalanche Studios is a Swedish company, which until 2018 (the release of JC4) was independent. In 2018 it was aquired by Nordisk (not to be mistaken with THQ Nordic, which is a different company)

The NY studio was formed in 2022, while the Montreal studio was made in 2023 and those two didn't get to work on Just Cause.

Avalanche Studios was reorganised into Avalanche Studios Group in 2019, which includes Expansive Worlds (theHunter series) and Systemic Reaction (most known game: Generation Zero)

Until this month, Avalanche Studios worked on Contraband (a co-op shooter), a project that was made for Microsoft XBox Games, but the game was just put on hold. So what we will probably see are more layoffs and a new restructuring, but i doubt that it will close anytime soon.

As for Just Cause, the IP was sold to the original Eidos in exchange for financing. When Eidos was bought by Square Enix, the IP was transferred to Square. Square still hired Avalanche to do JC3 and JC4

At the time of developing JC4, Avalanche was juggling with work on JC4 and Rage 2 (developed for Bethesda) and guess what: both games came out mediocre and full of technical problems.

Work on JC 4 was supervised by Square External Studios (a name that Eidos got at that time) and interference from Square were not uncommon.

Square also had unrealistic expectations from sales (not a first, as i will point out to what happened with Sleeping Dogs studios, United Front Games) and their own ideas of how a JC game should look to get those great numbers (point here: Square has no idea how to manage a western studio and no idea of the western market, outside their FF series)

Bottom line, unless Avalanche gets back the JC IP, you should consider it on hold indefinitely for now. They could have done that during the pandemic if they had the money, as Square was willing to part ways with a number of the Eidos IP's (and not only), but they didn't have the money to do it.

During the Pandemic, IO Interactive (a danish company) got back its independence from Square (it was aquired along with Eidos), plus their IP's (Hitman series, Kane and Lynch series, Freedom Fighters). Eidos was sold to Embracer group (formerly known as THQ Nordic/Nordic Games), along with a number of IP's (Thief, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex). But not all the IP's that Eidos had were sold back then, Just Cause remaining in Square's possession along with the Dungeon Siege series and a few others. Avalanche missed that train, sadly.

I do hope that at some point Square will sell whatever western IP's still remain in its possession, as they clearly have no idea what to do with them. End of rant (and thanks to anyone that cared to actually read this)
