Game still runs like ass on PC 2 years after release (Or atleast jedha)

I get that someone with a USD2000 card would not believe that a meager GT 1650 can run this game 'smoothly', but - with the right graphic settings and lower resolution - it will do!

The game can use less than 6GB VRAM. Unreal Engine can scale downwards as the SteamDeck and iPhone games prove. You can easily run new AAA games with 'old' cards if the CPU is modern enough and the GPU can handle the API versions used.

I even have fun trying to run the latest AAA with a GT1030 Watts 2GB VRAM Pascal GPU!

(The trick is using NvidiaProfileInspector and 'negative LOD' to reduce the necessary VRAM texture size to the tiniest amount. Otherwise the DX11/12 and Shader level features are supported.) Many games will 'run' on many older, sub-requirement cards. Not pretty, but working.

The 'key' for running games smoothly - aside from a game not being crash-prone buggy - is ... mature drivers.

Often, owners of the latest RTX xx80 and xx90 cards run on beastly 1 MegaWatt machines with the latest mainboards and CPUs. All those running on new drivers. Maybe having new hw/sw features enabled that those AAA games know nothing about.

[Earlier today, I read a Steam thread how Quake2 (Nightdive Enhanced Edition) ran 'like s**t' on a high-end PC. Turns out Nvidia's 'thread optimization' is messing with old game code. Too many cores and too wide spread threads! Turning that off, made the game run fine again. Many other examples like this.]

"Clearly ..." - so these people think - "... I can run any game in 4K with all maxed out and RT Pathtracing". But, games are most often not optimized to do so. Even with triple-A studios and Q&A departments, games are only tested on certain (common!) hardware.

Often (not in this case) Unity3D and Unreal Engine having 'max' settings and devs not preventing players to use them, is a common idiocy on both sides. Publishers want player to believe, 'their' game is the most technically advanced, most 'beautiful', etc - and players want to believe they need to run those games in the highest possible settings. Why else buy the most expensive cards? To be on the safe side. To be future proof. The 'deserve' to run the games on highest settings.

While with everything computer software and hardware related, the 'best experience' is with the 'most common' mature hardware/software/drivers - not the latest. That is why PC builders should buy the 'most common' hardware, not the 'hot new' latest. Equally 'high' settings - not 'extreme' are the safest choice for a 'smooth' experience?

Got it! Here’s the revised version of the letter to reflect that you’ve been playing CS2 for a couple of months:

Subject: Request to Review Competitive Cooldowns in CS2

To: Valve Corporation
From: justamapperYT
Date: Sunday, 3 August 2025

Dear Valve Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing as a dedicated player who has been playing Counter-Strike 2 for the past couple of months. While I’m relatively new to CS2, I’ve quickly grown to enjoy the game and appreciate the competitive experience it offers.

However, I’ve encountered a recurring issue that has become increasingly frustrating — the current system of competitive cooldowns.

I understand that these cooldowns are meant to discourage cheating and griefing, which is important for maintaining the integrity of the game. However, the system often ends up punishing players for reasons that feel too strict or unclear, such as disconnecting due to internet issues, being kicked, or simply having a rough match. It feels discouraging to be locked out of the game for these reasons, especially for new or casual players who are still learning the ropes.

I respectfully ask that you take another look at how competitive cooldowns are handled. A more balanced system that can better differentiate between intentional abuse and honest mistakes would go a long way in keeping the player base motivated and engaged.

Thank you for your time and for creating such a great game. I hope this feedback helps in improving the experience for all players.

Sincerely,
justamapperYT
A CS2 player since early 2025

Let me know if you want to mention specific cooldown situations or any improvements you’d like to suggest directly.

Play on faceit, the servers there are more stable and the competitive spirit is more purely distilled.
