Shame because I am enjoying the stories but can't play

I did not encounter any problems, except for one of my subs being sunk. The torpedoes did appear to hit the intended targets. I believe that they were wire-guided. If your wire gets cut, then they may tend to circle after missing the first target.

Also: disable autosaves in W2 and W3, they cause problems if not disabled. Manual save is your friend, treat this game as though it was made by Bethesda because you will run into game breaking bugs on occasion. Save frequently and make multiple save files. I have restarted only a few times due to the game crapping itself (entire mission log/checklist suddenly being completely blank) and/or freezing up in both W2 and W3, so even years down the line these problems are still present but they don't occur as frequently as they used to. Main issue with both W2 and W3 is the quests sometimes not triggering completion or how/where to continue them is sometimes not triggered until later. Also some locations in 3 were rushed and content was cut/forgotten about/left unfinished.

i think it's more of an anti-social thing. vocal people don't want to play with anyone, Anubus made that very clear in his letters. Harder dungeons do require cooperation to clear and this situation does not include anti-social players.
