We're almost finished 2024 and we've had several Steam client updates as well as Windows 7 updates via UpdatePack7. So far Windows 7 seems to be running well and will carry me into 2025 at the very least.

I've been running Windows 7 since transitioning from XP after bypassing (and watching the fallout from) Vista. So far so good aside from DirectX12 and some driver restrictions.

I closely followed the roll-out of Win8, 8.1 and 10 waiting for a good time to transition to a newer OS, testing a few other options while I've been waiting (Linux, Windows Server, Tiny/Lite Windows). So far I haven't found anything that seems to worth the effort or privacy risks / compromise.

Windows 7 SP2/3?

In 2021 I found UpdatePack7 which is a monthly security pack for all editions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008R2 (seems to be in development since 2013) and have had very good results with it. There is a small ~1MB downloader program (v1.5.0.0) which will download and/or verify the update pack (~800MB). The latest release was three days ago (24.6.12) and no issues to report. It's a significant saving of bandwidth, time and drive space and I am very grateful for it's consistent and diligent development. It is essentially the SP3 that Win7 users were always waiting for.

If you're having issues on Windows 7 SP1, try running the following from CMD (as administrator) and post your results here.
chkdsk
sfc /verifyonly

Hint:
I find starting Steam offline is much faster and smoother. Here's my steps to starting Steam Offline:
1 - edit the file loginusers.vdf
... mine was located here: \Steam\config\loginusers.vdf
2 - change "WantsOfflineMode" from 0 to 1
3 - save and set file [Properties] to [Read-only]
4 - start steam to check

Also, to remove the red banner at the top I added this to my steam.exe shortcut:
-pretendeol-w10

You can get your current Windows 7 revision number by entering this in PowerShell:
(Get-ItemProperty -path "HKLM:SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion").ubr

Number 1 tutorial how to get hacked or just being vulnerable to any threats online lol...I would definitely recommend to not have any important information on your pc, if you keep using outdated system :)...These posts never fails to impress me.

I personally wouldn't consider this to be a very good tutorial to harden Windows 7 for only running Steam.

For a harden Windows 7 Steam-only game console, I would have expected a script that:

* Shutdown services not normally used by Steam/games such as Windows Client and Windows Server services

* Set Windows firewall to reject all packets for network ports below 1024 and reject all broadcast packets

* Further tweak NTFS ACLs

* Set group policy to block running OS executables with a history of security issues including Internet Explorer

* Add dnscrypt-proxy to handle all DNS queries over HTTPS and reduce exposure to DNS based attacks

* Replace Windows Explorer Shell with Steam in Big Picture mode

In terms of a "Number 1 tutorial how to get hacked or just being vulnerable to any threats online," how about this:

Step 1: Install Windows 11

Step 2: Wait for another zero day vulnerability similar to CVE-2024-38063

Once Microsoft demands users buy TPM 2.0 capable hardware for "improved security" only to have it completely fail to mitigate a Remote Code Execution in the Windows 11 IPv6 network stack ... are we seriously still talking about upgrading to Windows 11 as being a security "improvement"?!

Consider this:

* The source code for the SteamDeck OS kernel is freely available for download and review

* The source code for the ChromeOS kernel is freely available for download and review

* The source code for the majority of Android OS kernel is freely available for download and review

* The source code for the XNU kernel used for Mac OS, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, etc is freely available for download and review

* The majority of the PlayStation 5 kernel seems to be same BSD source code that has been freely available for download and review

Of the major companies releasing OS kernels for use on popular consumer electronics, it seems like only Microsoft and Nintendo believe they can still achieve security with a closed source kernel.

When Microsoft says Windows 11 is a huge security improvement over Windows 7, this a self serving rubber stamped assessment only conducted by themselves. Several CVEs released during 2024 and up to now show that Windows 11 still continues have a poor track record for security. When Microsoft releases the kernel source code under an open source license to crowd source fixing it, then it will be easier to take them seriously.

Two Suggestions Regarding Savegames & Checkpoints
Just now
Nexarath
Hey guys,

So I'm gonna try and keep this positive rather than ranty, though I really do feel a rant is warranted too. So I've been rather meticulous about finding all of the secrets in every chapter, being a bit OCD about all that, just to find out at the end of Chapter 6 that I have, in fact, missed a health upgrade I distinctiy remember picking up. Worse yet, I was, obviously unable to do absolutely anything about it due to how the game works atm.

With that in mind, and the whole spirit of positivity rather than blind rage, can I make two suggestions that will SERIOUSLY improve the quality of life for completionists like me? One - remember the damn collectables when a checkpoint is loaded - this is literally a feature of every other game I have ever played, yet here it blindly remembers your last manual save and if it happened that you need to pick up a collectable between that and the next checkpoint (and one probably without any way of getting back to the last one) - congrats - you are s.. for good in this ENTIRE RUN.

And yes, I say entire run, because we currently don't have to option to replay even whole chapters, much less checkpoints. I realize checkpoints would be super tricky, and I'm definitely not asking for the ability to magically return to previous ones (though Doom Eternal managed that, too, for example - tho yeah, I realize it's a different style of game completely) but I -am- asking, PLEASE 1.) make new checkpoint saves each time a collectable is .. collected, so that it only ever needs to be picked up once 2) let us revisit previous chapters from the menu, so we can go back for missed stuff.

Thank you for your consideration :D Also, if anyone has a chapter 6 end (or, hell, beginning) save with EVERYTHING gathered up until that point, please hit me up :)

Question about the "secret" ending I got once but can't get again or find anywhere else

NP, I really regret this series ending the way it did...I wish this game got more attention and theory crafting as to the real meaning of the story and events.

Also the first time, in one of the other cutscenes in the game (not the final one), I remember something happened and Adam said the f word. I even remember thinking it's the only time in the game he says it. I believe it was after I broke into the bank, and he talked to someone over his direct link or whatever it's called. I can't quite remember though. But the second time I didn't get a cutscene where he ever says the f word.

Could this be Adam's reaction to Janus hacking his comms? (the only other possibility I could think of is him getting news of the girl dying at the church)

Also, I think that the "secret ending" dialogue might be caused by something minor, rather than something major.

Vega's reaction of "♥♥♥♥ Adam, I'll see what I could do..."

Maybe if you negatively react to Janus whenever he comes up in conversation and choose the dialogues that show that Adam doesn't trust Janus, or is suspicious of him, then Vega would think that you consider Janus shady or even a potential enemy.

I've played through this game at least 4 times, and my most recent playthrough is the first time where Miller tells me off in his office. He said "you've been nothing but insubordinate" or something like that (this happens some time after you meet the Psychiatrist in his room). And I was surprised because I didn't think I was anything but respectful to Miller. So I think it's possible maybe only a couple of dialogue options might cause you to get your ending.

I'd have to replay through the game myself and see if I can try and get it.
