That's what i ment with "2", a more advanced way to play Spells, similar to HandTraps.
"We are happy to announce our new mechanic, all hail the HandSpells!".

Look it's been over 20 years so power creep was meant to happen, but what they created is not just powercreep, they created cards that completely bypass core mechanics.
And it's not something new, cards that bypass core mechanics exist for years.
For example for fusion summons you needed a Spell card, now you can just Fusion summon without a Spell card.

You can't just make things up and expect people know all your broken rulings.
Traps that can be set on field and activated the same turn they were Set is one of the examples.
A new player thinks that Trap cards cannot be activated the turn they were Set, BUT SOME OF THEM DO.

It's just stupid, the game doesn't even follow it's own rules.
It does follow its rules. One of the rules has always been that what is on the card has the final say. You can't do X, but if a card specifically says you can, you can. This is how lots of card games work. The mess with rulings is more to do with a lack of design and general handling of the game.

A lot of the core rules and mechanics of Yugioh aren't good anyway. Not for funs sake anyway. Polymerization should never have been needed to fuse. Its way more fun if spells like that are extra things rather than mandatory includes. They had to do a lot to make it work. Stuff like Synchro's and XYZ is way better as a mechanic for play.

The problems with this game don't stem from the things you said. Even going by the regular rules and understandings we would have problems because of design choices or lack thereof. They could handle the game properly and make it way better without removing any of that stuff. Because the issue isn't whether you are bypassing core mechanics.
