As someone who played since early access and restarted many times i can feel your pain to a point. A summoner is what I usually go for myselg in arpgs and yes, sometimes he lack of certain geat pieces make ot less efficient, which should be expected as someone starting out but you can sill do it. In slormancer a lot of what you can do and how you play comes from one gear piece, one this from a list of maaany. And I kinda have that love/hate about it because of that. Especially if you start over like I did and you already have a toy in mind you want.
However what made it work for me is to see the game not like the other arpgs I played where I go for a certain archetype I want and make the best of the gear the game gives me. I based my buiod around what slorm reapers I did get and tried to experiment. (Also, you would not have enjoyed the necromancer reaper early, because it needs huge amounts of mana before you actually get a lot of minions oit of it)

I think that is a big difference in the design the devs wanted since the reapers affect your build way more than legendaries in other gamed do. So in case you decide to play the other classes at some point as well, dont go about it with a cerain build or idea in mind, instead, make it depend on experimenting with what the game gives you. Heck my second fresh start I got the Manabender on my knight and played a mana and elemental damage based spin to win knight which was way off anything I ever planned with him.

I'm "ok" if you need to unlock your class or something like that. For example, in Loop Hero it took me 4~5 hours to unlock the Necromancer. I just needed to progress a little into the game. Like, no matter what, you will unlock him, it's part of the campaign (yet optional), but here it's behind RNG, and that's frustrating.

One thing that I don't understand is: there are 3 specializations about Totems, but none about summoning. If this is the "dev vision about the game", well, ok then. Yet I heavily disagree and still think it needs to change.

But ok, the game isn't for me.

All weapons are viable.

Unless you look at build online before leveling your character, there is no point of looking for a specific weapon, especially when you don't know them.
