The real issue is that once your game gets opened up (i.e. your host fumbles a reinforce and calls for backup) you can't just return it to private. You have to remake the group.

The familiar servo flys to objects you can pick up, while you're running around, so it helps that way, I only tried the skull and raven and both seem useless in combat (Act 2 and don't know what skills/talents to pick) and when I reached Janus I had a Skull in my inventory that followed me around announcing I'm the rogue trader and in the Genestealer mission, the skull being one of the only sources of light was great (too bad when you get to the lair, it's all lit up, if should have stayed dark and creepy)
