For anyone else wondering about this, that also uses Linux, here are the steps I took to accomplish this:
  1. Download ProtonPlus flatpak through Discover (or whatever else your distro uses)
  2. Download SteamTinkerLaunch (2025-07-14) through ProtonPlus
  3. Select "Steam Tinker Launch" compatibility tool in the game's properties menu within Steam (you might have to restart Steam for it to appear if it was already running)
  4. Launch the game
  5. Quickly click on the "MAIN MENU" button at the bottom of the dialog window that pops up, before it times out
  6. Click on the "GAME MENU" button at the bottom of the window (the window might needs to be maximized or resized for you to see it)
  7. Check the "Use custom command" and "Only custom command" boxes
  8. Click on "Project_Plague.exe" to the right of "Custom command" and navigate to the version 1.4.1 game executable file "Project_Plague.exe" at the location you downloaded the version 1.4.1 depot to, mine was located at: ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steamapps/content/app_2277560/depot_2277561/ (you might have to select "Show Hidden Files" to navigate there)
  9. Optional: you might have to select the correct Proton version, mine defaulted to the wrong one (you can select it after scrolling down a bit)
  10. Click on the "SAVE AND PLAY" button at the bottom of the window
If you're doing this on a Steam Deck or some HTPC running Steam Gaming Mode, you might have to do this in desktop mode for the first time. I hope this helps someone and that I didn't miss any steps.

Thanks for sharing.
I highly recommend Proton GE. It's way much efficiently than original proton, and you could probably get 3~5% more fps than on Windows
