My first distro 20 years ago was SuSE. After trying debian, LFS, ubuntu, kubuntu and probably more I forgot am now back on OpenSUSE. Really like the Tumbleweed rolling - bleeding edge and full control. But yeah, it may not be for everyone as it is not so popular and may be harder to find troubleshooting tips. Somehow works for me.
What I really disliked on kubuntu was it was really outdated and you had to do tons of tweaking to have anything work. That was years ago though.

You could just pick one of the Pantheon reward weapons to get around the culture weapon limitations, like Earthshaker's Hammer or Berserker's Greataxe.
