So I've put in about 17 hours as of now and this is the third time I've exited the game, gone for a break and came back and all my progress is completely wiped. It doesn't happen all the time, but now I'm kinda fed up with loosing all my progress again...

I dunno, maybe the propaganda wasn't needed. Propaganda aside, Democrats ran a bad campaign near the end there. But man if the propaganda wasn't extremely effective. As demonstrated by the user who is convinced it's real. Can't link to Harris doing it. But will keep pushing it without any evidence of it ever happening. Even in the face of people who know it's just a made up narrative.

From my experience the attacks start winding up from the moment you stick a building mod on your ship and start scanning for a suitable location for your station.
Straight away you have trash worrying you and then the hostile warp-ins start.

If you haven't even built a station, then you're just talking about random hostiles that are in systems. Those are weak and there aren't many, they do not escalate in power.

This depends on the system you are thinking of settling. I found scanning in a system that is rich in minerals and has high sunlight that the attacks escalate quite rapidly. Also some of those warp-ins are near unstoppable elites (read above).
All in all the game recognises you are building or about to build and responds accordingly. It's not just wandering random enemy's.

It wouldn't change anything for tanks, none of the tanks have heavy armor, only anti-tank and a bit of medium, and it's definitely not going to outclass just using a thermite anytime soon. We've already got the senator and it doesn't seem to be the "only thing we use" in secondary slots on automatons, infact I'd actually welcome the idea of throwing knives being popular, all you ever see on automatons is thermites.

Thermites are grenades. They're not just all most people use for bots; they're all most people use for anything. A knife and a thermite grenade should not have the same functional efficacy, nor even compete in the same class. You're asking for a knife to do in a reasonable amount of throws what an ultimatum shot can do to a tank. Think about that.

People largely don't use the senator because it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying to use correctly, only has six shots, and the recoil makes it unsuitable for panic-fire against enemies that are too close, which is the role most secondary-slot gear serves in most loadouts. The knife being medium-pen is already pretty generous to this end, considering it's just a bit of metal being thrown at a target. I'd expect medium-pen on something like this if the blade was edged with plasma. I would never expect to be able to kill a tank with it unless I'm throwing at the vents.

You're just completely ignoring what I'm saying aren't you? There's no parts on any tank that has heavy armor, it's mostly tank armor, with bits of medium that the knife can already damage, the knife can already kill a tank and no trust me buffing it to heavy armor pen is not asking for it to be able to do what an ultimatum can, those are very VERY far apart.
Thermites are not "all people use for anything", incendiary and gas grenades are pretty common on any other faction with occasional explosive grenades too.
The senator "only has six shots" in a reload, it's got 40 spare?? People would undoubtedly rather use a senator for heavy armor pen than the knives that only deal 50 damage more than a single shot from it.
The knife being medium pen isn't "generous" at all, the knife is miserable. Yeah it makes sense but so we really need to care about that? Realism is already actively plagueing tons of games nowadays, including this one, I think we can just ignore it when we remember everything else in this game that actually doesn't make sense but was done for gameplay.
