How do the Research "Hack" Technologies work?

Just a couple of thing that I would like to add. An EMP bomb is supposed to make exactly 4 signal leaks. I say "supposed to" because depending on where on the module you hit, there is a chance that a signal leak doesn't get created or gets created in an a spot you can't get to because of bad geometry. Save before you try, and if you get less than 4, reload and try again somewhere else on the module. As long as it's possible to get the blueprint from a signal leak, one of the four leaks is guaranteed to be a blueprint.

The new wide area sensor array, conservatory, penthouse, and other modules in the "other" category can be gotten through signal leaks even without research, or even the PHQ. Most connecting part blueprints cost less than the EMP bomb from faction representatives, though. Build modules (wharf, shipyard, and equipment dock) blueprints are only available for purchase or through (8.0 beta) diplomacy. Argon and Teladi trading station unique parts aren't available to you at all. And, of course, Xenon station parts are impossible to get.

Yes, random red-glow signal leaks can also give blueprints, but this is rare.

The ingredients for an EMP bomb are: 1 remote detonator, 1 secure container, and 1 lodestone. Although the ingredients are much cheaper than the EMP bomb to buy or sell, they are hard to find. So I recommend taking them any chance you get. None of the ingredients are illegal anywhere (nor is the EMP bomb itself), so there is no risk holding on to them.

Black market vendors, Freeport personal traders, and independent ports do buy and sell EMP bombs for a high price.
