Let's say you grab wrinkly brainmeat (+20% all, 4 points), decathalon competitor (+30% sprinting, strength, throwing, 5 points), hobbyist chef (2x cooking, 2 points), and gardener (2x agriculture, 3 points) at the start of the game. That's a 14 point investment right there.

Now let's say you grind all those skills and max them out, then you waddle your way over to the amnesia threshold and take a slap on the wrist. That's 14 freed points for any other positive trait or to get rid of 14 points worth of negative traits. That's ditching multiple negative traits by itself.

The only way to balance this out is by making it a REAL punishment for your levels that negate going most of your playthrough at an much higher xp rate.

hi as far as i remember, this game did have an earlier version which i played (but it was put on hold for a while, while it was redesigned quite a lot)

since the 1.0 update there is an even faster and easier way to level fortitude. you can max it stupid fast now without relying on exploits like dying nonstop the skill is not longer an issue to be leveling but early game its still difficult to get it up. the moment you reach reactors it becomes almost trivial to max it in no time.

What difficultly level were you playing on? The higher levels are ridiculous because the AI gets insane cheat buffs.

On the campaign map, it's more that the player gets debuffs: there's some agent success % debuffs, some loyalty debuffs, and i think some public order debuffs.

As said though: just keep loyalty for each party above -10. You can promote, marry them, send them as emissaries, do the "pay money for food and loyalty" thing, or just spend money for a flat +10 for a set number of turns.
It really isn't hard. You can even raise an army with someone from their party in it, put a diplomat in there, and give the diplomat +loyalty buffs.

You can ignore it all together if you just have an army on each side of your empire with a general from each party in it, and fight the odd battle with them.

There's a number of different ways to make it so you can minimize how often you have to interact with it. One of my favorite ways is to force Successions to get rid of problematic parties, or parties with problematic traits. Make sure you have armies near the regions they hold influence in, kick the parties teeth in until I get one with easily manageable and far more desirable traits. Before that? Secure loyalty is the best thing. Buy the two most loyal factions loyalty, send the other one as a diplomat somewhere. Marry the guy off. I avoid promoting enemy characters until after reforming into an empire personally speaking.

I'm only passively interested in this game but meh, not really a fan of this character art. I'm not saying we need to go full-blown Asian games industry on character designs but she isn't exactly the most appealing in design. Could definitely be worse, though.
