I'll give that a shot:

1. Flagship is king. Well yeah, IF you can get there. Getting there is immediately more important, Mike already touched on this in this thread.

2. Defense > Offense. In general , no, the greatest defense is still a great offense (and this counts offensive systems like hacking). Most of my own runs (varies by ship) involve getting better defense ie two shield bubbles, getting a weapon improvement, getting hacking, and only boosting defense when I'm solid in taking ships down or there are just no better options. You can go a long way with minimal shields, for example, but it's very hard to win by running from every fight because you can't kill the enemy ship.

3. Defense drone 1 is a must.
Oof. I hate drones. Defense drone 1 is solid and sometime the right choice, but I'll take another system any day if I can. Definitely not necessary.

4. You have to get hacking and mind control for the boss. Again, nah. Hacking is ultra powerful (for the whole run), but you can in fact win without it if you need to. Mind control is mostly a convenience and lots of ships won't afford you this system if you prioritize hacking (as you probably should).

5. Train the crew. Yes, do this. But you don't HAVE to, it just gives you a solid edge for no real investment.

6. Burst 5 or more. Hacking is a thing. Beam weapons also pick up slack. Boarding is also DEFINITELY a thing, especially for the flagship.

7. Don't depend on consumables for offense. Small bomb or breach bomb can be amazing, especially if you are boarding. Missiles can make a big difference if that's what you got. Drones can be a linchpin of a build, and are often important for phase 3 to get the Zoltan shield down fast.

8. Plot your course: yes. As much as possible, aiming generally first to maximize beacons seen for maximum stores, and secondly to maximize number of beacons visited. Also to not get caught in a dead end.

9. Zoltan crew > all. Not really. Boarding ships want offense, an engi is always very useful, slug captains are very nice, etc.. also you may not want a Zoltans in shields, if you like flashing shields to win against ion attacks and pulsars.

10. Upgrade piloting. Lol noooooo. 20 scrap goes to anything else first. Do this if you are well ahead of the curve, or filling out value points at endgame. The manual search ion storm blue option is a trap, it doesn't come up as much as you think it does. Get hacking instead.
