Like I said, the two things that matter most in War Thunder are knowing the maps, and knowing the vehicles.

If you know the maps, you know where to place yourself for the most advantageous situation for whatever vehicle you're in. If you're in a tank that does well in a brawl, you'll want to be up close. If you're in a tank that snipes, you'll want to find a good sniper spot. If you're on a map that doesn't have a good brawling spot, or a good sniper spot, you'll know to not spawn those tanks in.

And it dovetails nicely into the second point, know the vehicles. If you know the strengths of your tank (does it brawl well, does it snipe well, is it a fast flanker) you'll know how to exploit the maps to your advantage. The other side of that coin is knowing what vehicles you face. Knowing their weak spots, so you know what shots to take and where to aim to deal the most damage. Knowing their reload speeds so you know whether its safe to push them after they fire, or knowing if you should stand your ground or retreat behind cover.

War Thunder isn't like Counter Strike where you need absurd flicks and reaction speed to outperform the enemy. Its more like a game of chess, where if you place yourself in the right spot, with the right vehicle, you'll do fantastic. Put yourself in the wrong spot, with the wrong vehicle, you're gonna have a bad match.

But how do i know if it's a good position? When the map shows up before the match starts it just seems like it's gonna take a long time to evaluate where to go, not to mention i don't know if it'll actually be effective.

That's just experience from playing and seeing how your team moves, how the enemy team moves, and back and forth.

Eventually you know to expect a handful of people in c3 behind a rock, and you'll know, sometimes someone runs around that small spot in C1, so always keep half an eye there and be ready for it.

Or knowing, if I go to f6, I can get shots on the enemies before they get to C3.
