Inspired by your "dual backup" concept, I looked into how the twin trope is used in mystery and detective fiction. There are Edogawa Rampo’s 1924 short story The Twins, the Tape Murders case in the Korean drama Special Affairs Team TEN, and Ken Follett’s novel The Third Twin—all compelling examples of how twin identities can create layers of deception and suspense.

Then there are the two spare keys: one held by the Sacristan, and the other by the Superior. I recall someone pointing out that when the Superior opened the cell, she didn’t lock it with the key afterward, which could be significant.

Here’s a neat connection: Edogawa Rampo’s pen name honors Edgar Allan Poe—and Poe himself wrote a short story, William Wilson, that deals with doppelgängers and identity. We might also explore the relevant entries on TV Tropes for further inspiration.

Moira’s hair dye—used to cover her natural color—raised early suspicions of a setup in Volume One. This fueled a wild theory: Catherine faked her death and is impersonating her Irish compatriot Moira now. (Only Moira and Eustace saw the body at the scene. But could everyone else, who knew Catherine intimately, really be fooled?)

The conspiracy is related to Edward IV. At that time, Edward IV had a "binge and purge" habit, and the ambiguous cause of his death provides a fictional space (in the prologue conversation, one person says, "Kill the bloody king of England"). The gentleman in the original text says, "The king’s…habits…make him a plush target." This also aligns with the scene of a dog vomiting.

Next, I will quote my previous posts in other threads as a summary of my personal viewpoints at this stage.
We should avoid losing sight of the bigger picture by only focusing on the details. The key lies in the author’s repeated emphasis on the manuscript's author and cover, as well as the two swords' inscriptions that everyone has mentioned. Urim and Thummim:

אוּרִים וְתּוּמִים (Urim vəTummim).

The main issue is the subject matter of the 'historical novel' itself. After finishing the last chapter of Volume Two, I find the foundation of the entire story to be shaky, much like Eustace's pile of books. The narrator's narrative in the manuscript has also devolved into a mystery that confuses reality and fiction. I hope that the nested metafiction does not detract from the story's brilliance.

The problem I have with the Catherine = Moira theory is that everyone in the convent has made it clear repeatedly that Catherine was involved with everyone directly at some point because she had the habit of involving herself with people and her interest in something and then ditching them the moment she found something else to get into. So how would she fake being Moira without anyone else going "Hey.....doesn't she kinda look a LOT like Catherine?" UNLESS what Wiggly Squish pointed out is true and they're actually twins masquerading as just Moira which explains why we never see her hair except when she chose Hedwig she's got blonde strands in the baths. But if they're twins, why didn't anyone notice? Unless Catherine went out of her way to hide it. I'm willing to accept the possibility that they're both pretending to be the one person, if anything. Maybe that's why Moira randomly wanted to cook when Darcy went MIA. Catherine, as Moira, randomly had one of her *Oh this looks neat!* moments and decided to try out cooking. The Real Moira might've thought "Oh I don't wanna mess with Darcy's space." maybe but Catherine would've gone for it? I dunno, I'm thinking out loud here.
