Well for starters, I think you shouldn't get into a slippery slope of "if you like quest markers, you like your game played for you" which is fallacious to assume, as is the idea that I'm particularly using this as an argument for why this should exist. I simply expressed my own sentiment on this without proposing this as the main or ultimate reason for why this should be the case.

Now you've asked me where you draw the line, I think the line has to be drawn at where the remake becomes better in quality of life without compromising on gameplay, story and other central qualities of a game. Now you have to ask, does fast traveling, quest markers, immediate transition into turn-based combat (I assume that's what you meant by "combat system made optional" to already explored locations improve the game experience or does having to travel everywhere on foot at all times improve the game experience? The aggregate answer to these questions is how the game should be made. For me, the answer to all that is, I don't like the way things used to be in the original. I didn't much like the original game for much of anything, to be honest. I've completed skytrails 1, 2 and dropped 3 close to the end years ago. So for me, this is a reason to go back into it and enjoy it somewhat more, which is what I've been doing. I think in my reasoning and experience, I am sympathized with by the vast majority of the "modern audience" and a significant part of the people who like me, have already played the games before. For me, not having these quality of life improvements, as I see them, is a reason not to play the game. Improved graphics are not enough to entice me back. At the same time, I honestly believe the people who miss the absence of these things are at most inconvenienced by it, but the negative impact on their overall experience cannot be more than minimal. Based on this, I conclude that the line in this remake has been appropriately drawn by Falcom.

So, essentially, correct me if I'm wrong, a remake should primarily appeal to those who either didn't like the original or couldn't be bothered engaging with it due to "outdated" mechanics, visuals, etc. opposed to appealing to actual fans of the original who loved it? In other words, a remake isn't a love-letter to long-time fans, but rather a way to win over the masses? If so, explain to me how "Everything becomes like everything" isn't a valid concern?

I liked the Trails series precisely because it was such a unique experience. I had played JRPGs my whole life, and I decided to give it a try a year or so ago and absolutely fell in love with it. I was hesitant at first because of its slow-paced nature, but now that's one of my favorite aspects of it, but it's very niche, is it not? Imagine if they decided to get rid of it? I may not have loved it as much as I do. That's the problem. At some point the QoL changes stops being QoL changes and starts fundamentally altering the experience, and again, who gets to decide where the line gets drawn? Should we just do away with the concept of a "target audience" where those who specifically seek out a niche experience is left in the dust in favor of appealing to the widest audience?
These are different things. First of all, what you said, appealing to new fans or people who were put off by the bad qualities of the previous game is not the same as appealing to the masses, there are plenty of people who started the games with cold steel and feel hesitant to go back to the previous games, because graphically and combat-mechanically they are objectively worse. It would be quite a travesty to include such a group of people in the category appealing to the masses like skytrails isn't inherently somewhat niche game in a niche genre of tactical JRPGS. Your average Joe is not going to play this one way or another.

As far as your recurring question, I answered where the line should be drawn. The aggregate answer to the questions asked above. How can you even get rid of the experience? The story is the same, it's still as slow, it doesn't get any faster. The addition of travel doesn't affect the pacing of the game in a significant way. The entire story, all of the dialogs and cutscenes are still there as far as I know, with new content retconned into the story such as details about Van's involvement, which is another reason for me to get back into it. You are extremely worried about the future of the game, but what nobody talks about and what you don't think about is that all these QoL changes are optional, how you want to travel around Liberl is your business. That's why I said the people who miss the presence of fast travel will at most inconvenience people who miss its absence. I've been playing Trails for almost 5 years, I don't feel like the experience of the games is diminishing with newer releases, it only gets better in my experience. The only appeal to modern audiences that's observed is in tailoring dialogs to match the social standards of 2025, but which has already been extensively discussed every single time a new game gets brought to the West.
