On the other hand, if it's used to automate a string of in-game inputs and give yourself an unfair advantage, then it's as bannable as any cheat software.
But for good reason, we have no idea the internals of VAC and how it determines when a script is offering an unfair advantage, so it's not possible to know how your friend was banned specifically. I'd recommend not using any kind of automation via a 3rd party script.
So it's likely to be the cause.
I using recently Autohotkey - til now in not protected games but I wonder if I can use it also in games like team fortress? In fact, can I get banned by having it running without hitting the hotkey? It is a macro to shoot a circle.
