Game bans in VALVe games are permanent and non-negotiable.

Read this piece of information, game bans can be given for various reasons, not only cheating:

Only you know what you did or didn't do in the game and of course VALVe knows but posting here doesn't get a ban removed.

when I log into the game, I have a vak ban written on top, but for some reason it doesn't display as a vak in my profile.

Irrelevant. The ban cannot be appealed.

The in-game message is irrelevant, what is displayed on your profile counts and it clearly states GAME ban.
