Can modding any Dark Souls game result in a game ban or VAC ban permanently recorded on your steam account?
Hey.

I wanted to revisit the ds trilogy and I intended to mod all the dark souls games (DS1 Ptde, DS2, DS2 Sotfs and DS3).

I just wanted to use dsfilx+patch+ultrawide plugin mod for Ptde and flawless widescreen for the latest installments of the trilogy
in order to play them in ultrawide format.

I never really modded any game with online functionality, so I never had to worry about these things. Dark souls games use EAC for online pvp as far as I understand.
Digging into steam discussions and reddit I've read a few comments saying that "there is always a slight chance of getting banned". That being a FromSoftware ban, again as far as I understand.

But I can not find in certainty,
if a soft ban or an EAC ban can scar your steam account permanently with a game ban or Vac ban.

Ptde is permanently offline so I guess this simplifies things. What about the other 2 installments?
I'd rather play them with black bars, if there's even the SLIGHTEST possibility of getting a ban permanently associated with my steam account.

Thanks in advance to everyone willing to clear things up for me and help.

even if you are caught, it will only ban you from the game for a set time and will not put a record on your steam account. there is a way to disable the anti cheat, but it will mean you cannot go online.
Is it absolutely certain it will not mark your account with a "game ban" ?

i am certain, and a quick google search will prove it.
Kinda hard to get a ban when Dark Souls doesn't use VAC or EAC.........

EDIT:

I stand corrected. Some use game bans but to assume they're not permanent is very wrong.

If the ban is displayed on the profile, it's permanent.

The duration of the game ban is determined by the developer. Only permanent game bans are displayed on the user’s profile. Temporary game bans, or suspensions, are not displayed.

My brother I have done more than a mere google search and like I wrote above there's always that slight chance of bans, that's why I opened a discussion tagged with steam bans.

I don't understand if those are merely fromsoft bans and that alone or carry over to your steam account id and are showed off permanently.

Read the edit.
Since there's always that risk involved and not playing in ultrawide is not suuuuch a dealbreaker I think it's just not worth the risk at this point.
And yes I know that millions have used the ultrawide mod without any issue, but I'm that paranoic that I would be that 1% to trigger a false positive somehow :')

Thanks regardless both of you for your time!
Oh one last thing. Is using a hex editor, to straight up modify the graphics config files easier to not get detected as opposed to the flawless widescreen mod?

Thank you, I did read it all and it aligns with my search so far.

The question though still remains for veterans of the FromSoft games family.
Has anyone ever got a permanent game ban displayed on his/her steam account?

Any more input regarding the original question is greatly appreciated!

its easy

you use ANY kind of 3rd party software at your own & personal risk

you dont want to risk any kind of ban ? then simply dont use any 3rd party software
I'm still open to a constructive discussion and not stating the obvious and not helping at all.

The original question still stands and is:
Can you get a permanent "game ban" recorded on your steam account by using mods in the Dark Souls trilogy.

my point above still stands

You don't get a game ban, you get a "soft ban" for modding online and it drags you into a server filled with punished players. FromSoftware never does issue game bans.

Thank you!

This was what I was looking for, confirmation that steam profile 'game bans" can not be triggered.

The soft bans are very specific bans and not everyone is simply banned forever, just because of a single infraction. It all depends on WHY the ban happened, that means severity may differ from account to account. If you get banned just for "modding", you have a few weeks time to play clean and eventually get the restriction(s) lifted again. That is different from how permanent game bans work, they will never be lifted, soft bans are at developer discretion and can also simply be temporary. But as already posted, if you are unsure about getting banned, simply don't mod the game or inject weird stuff into it.
