Can you get banned for having cheat installed?

So yeah i used a cheat in css before and the hack is still installed on my pc, can I get a vac ban on csgo because of that? :P

If by "installed" means the cheat's files are still in your machine BUT they're not in place (modified DLLs/EXEs have not replaced the original files) and the cheat is not active, you should be fine.

Of course if you're not 101% sure if the cheat is not active/running, you'll get a ban if you connect to a VAC secured server. Which I think it's just a matter of time now, since you used a cheat.

Various cheats have been known to be so poorly written as to trigger VAC bans even when you 'exit' them. Or they auto-run because tehy're basically part of a bot net or whatever.

As others have recommended, you should format your comptuer to be 100% sure of being free from whatever cheat you installed.

It depends on the cheat, however I wouldn't want to find out the hard way that it's still detectable. As has been said, reformat the computer to be sure.

Hmm It I have not opened the cheat since i got banned on source 185 days ago, so if i get a ban because just having it on my computer it would be kinda weird to me.

CS:GO uses a version of the Source engine. It may still detect it.

A day of install and updates beats the hell out of thinking your safe and getting another account banned *at some point* in the future... maybe that point is after you have invested much into the new account.

I guess my previous advice to "Go ahead and download all the cheats you want." (obvious sarcasm) was deemed unhelpful by a moderator. Okay...fine. But why are we discussing then what cheats you can and can't get away with using in the VAC discussion forum? How exactly is this a productive area of discussion and why should it be encouraged at all?

I did. It was a very short thread and the OP openly admitting to using CSS cheats in the past and being worried about being banned because the cheat is still installed on their computer.

If the OP was truly worried about it, they wouldn't even need to post here to ask. Simply, uninstall the hack. Problem solved. No hack installed, no hack to be detected.

It seems the OP is still inclined to using it if not in CSS then probably in some other game that their cheat supports, so from my perspective it appears they simply want to know what they can get away with.

I ... I really am a loss for words. You can't understand the user is just concerned the cheat that was installed on the computer, that he was banned for, might get his new game banned as well?
