I had Cheat Engine running for another game while I was playing on a Garry's Mod server. Will I get VAC'ed?
I was using Cheat Engine for another non-steam game while Garry's Mod was running. I did not use Cheat Engine on Garry's Mod though. Will this potentially get my account VAC'ed?

you actually could, even though it's not injected any sort of way into Garry's Mod.

i think his name was MattCS (on youtube) and he got VAC banned in a similar way.

Nope. If CE didn't touch Garry's Mod in any way, then VAC doesn't care.

Or, more likely, that MattCS is just trying to make himself more important. Seen enough stupid crap on YT, including this "my ban got lifted cuz I'm famous"-nonsense.

No one - not streamers or anyone - is ever told what their vac ban is for.

So streamers and youtubers lie like it's going out of style. If they ever claim they knew why or were told why, that's the biggest clue: you are NEVER told.

But in the end, if you didn't put the cheat connected to a vac-protected game on, that's not going to get a ban.

No, but don't inject the game or play with the hack I read the rules for more information. https://support.steampowered.com/kb/7849-RADZ-6869/ i do not speak English well.

VAC isn't like these kernel-level anticheats you've probably heard about (Vanguard, BattleEye, Easy Anticheat, etc.). It doesn't even scan running processes; it doesn't "know" what you have running unless it interacts with the server it is protecting. So if Cheat Engine didn't interact with Gmod, or more specifically, the VAC protected Gmod server you were connected to, then you will not be banned.

Just don't run a 3rd party software that modify something while you're playing on a vac secured server, its a risky move

It's only risky if the 3rd party software interacts with the VAC secured server. There is no risk in something simply running because VAC doesn't scan your running processes.

Just make sure its not interfering, but I'd recommend keeping it closed always

Cause OP told us something strange - avoiding VAC by launching CE after connection server (as i understand), and launching CE in background "just for nothing!!111" - i guess OP try to cheat in Gmod. In that case he can get his ban.

For Cheat Engine you got connection error before entering server and you cannot go to multiplayer with CheatEngine just be RUNNED in background. It added to VAC's KNOWN cheats Db. Since you do not get your connection error (some kind "whitelisted" cheat that POSSIBLE used to cheat but possbile not = it not ban you just for first detection) - you will get your VAC ban. CheatEngine is NOT allowed on VAC secured servers in Valve games.
VAC ban u if you try to cheating with Cheat Engine and not ban if it just launched. But since you do not get connection error (avoid that) - that mean you are not safe. Ppl above not right here - they mean exaclty same thing - it whitelisted - but miss that point that you somehow already entered server.

VAC in non-Valve\Source game ban you for Cheat Engine (or anything) in any circumstances. VAC in Source\Valve games do not allow you to connect with some injections that KNOWN for used as cheating (CheatEngine, or ReShade injector that used for custom wallhacks presets and many other and suspicious process trying to interrupt Gmod) but do not ban you for them. Normally. And yet, trying to cheat - even if it not work (it possible to try, but cheat engine never work in multiplayer games) - lead to VAC ban.

So there is no 100% answers here. And i guess that there is more chances that you get your ban.

And know what? It not be "for nothing!!111". Cheats not allowed. Not matter that theoretically there is some users protection from unfair bans. Not properly working cheats still not allowed when you on VAC secured server. There is no reasons to keep CheatEngine in RAM.

Why would you leave cheat engine running if you're not using it for the game you're in? I get it's embarrassing to admit using cheat engine for gmod but come on, just be honest.

The answers you've received so far have been "you could but maybe not", which is true. It's best to just not leave cheat engine open at all, better safe than sorry, you know?
