Authenticator hacked and $$$ csgo skins stolen
Hey guys so about 2 years ago I woke up to everything in my csgo inventory missing. At this point, id been playing cs for a while and had about $300+ worth of skins in my inventory, including a knife and gloves. After i realized everything was missing i went right to the Steam app and realized somehow a user i never messaged or had any contact with had sent a trade offer to himself with all my items so all he had to do was accept it. its been awhile and I'm starting to get back into the game after vowing to never buy anything from steam again ig I just love the game too much. I've always been weary of clicking on any sus links and avoiding any messages from unknown users, never had any virus or anything like that on my PC. guess I'm just still a little confused as to how it all just vanished. I know there's little to no chance of me ever seeing those skins again but ig I'm just wondering how to keep this from happening again, would it be best to just make an entirely new account? would that even solve the issue?

thanks for any insight

The chances of any 2FA getting "hacked" or "brute forced" are astronomical to the point where the only logical conclusion is that you, one way or another, gave access to someone to both your account and the 2FA.

It may sound a little rough, but do you ever remember logging into any shady trading website back then? Is your account strictly your own? Did you make any deals of a legally questionable nature?

Rest assured items will not vanish for no reason. There is something more to this story that is not evident right away.

Change your password and everything and then write to the support, you probably won't recover but you can try to do something

Hijacked, not hacked. You leaked your account credentials somehow.

Do not trade until your account is secured.

Take the following steps to secure your account:

1. Scan for malware. https://www.malwarebytes.com/
2. Check that the email and phone number on the Steam account are still yours.
3. Deauthorize all other devices. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
4. Change passwords from a clean computer.
5. Generate new backup codes for your Mobile App. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
6. Revoke the API key (there should be no key). https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey

Steam does not return inventory items or wallet funds: https://help.steampowered.com/faqs/view/3B6E-B322-2400-8D24

If you no longer have access to your account, read this:

Nothing to do with VAC though.
