Does vac scan processes running on the pc? for example explorer.exe steam.exe or only scans dll files that are embedded in the game?

VAC has both client and server parts. Client part is a library that scans memory and collect some system information. At least, it was so when I worked to implement VAC support in the wine (windows compatibility layer for Linux). It sends collected information to the server and we do not know anything about what this server does with it.

I was playing on a secure server running a cheat engine that I forgot to close.Hopefully vac doesn't scan running processes

If it was cheats for that game, you can bet it'll get a ban.

The easiest solution: don't cheat, period. Ever.

You sign an agreement with not only the Steam service, but the games individually that you will refrain from doing so.

That was one of the moments that I wanted to mention, but omitted for brevity. VAC requests a list of all running processes from the OS and sends it to the server. So, in theory, it can issue a ban simply because it doesn't like the process.

All this user does is repeat the same questions over and over and over again. The Steam Community Forums are not your personal blog.
