ARK Survival Evolved VAC

Just playing ARK casually with some friends, nothing else running except chrome in the background on tangerine tycoon. Everything on ARK froze up and I couldn't do anything, turned out our internet crashed, however as soon as the net was back up I received a steam notification stating that I had been VAC banned.
Now I've been banned before on MW2 for installing an addon for bots offline so I could play without internet but this time it's without any reason, I don't see why I would receive a VAC ban incorrectly if I haven't even been running any other programs.

PS. I do have cheat engine, however it doesn't work on server sided games so why would I even attempt that in multiplayer, and I thought VAC only detected stuff attached to the process... Is VAC broken?
