I need a clarification; rules regarding macros and "smart" hardware
I hope this is the right place to ask this. If not, I'll gladly move it.

I have a Swiftpoint Z gaming mouse. Like most modern mice it has profiling software and multiple "blank" buttons that can be bound to perform different functions in game. Unlike other mice, the macro fuctions and software are very sophisticated. It can emulate any kind of input, including complex text strings, console commands, basic coding, text messages and even complete Combos.

And I'm wondering whether that's a legal feature to use for Ranked online play.

For example, in a Fighting Game I could record all of the complex combos onto mouse functions and trigger them with a single tap, ensuring perfect execution each time. And with the onboard SSD drive I could save a profile for each character, and swap as needed.

Thanks.

Sending mouse/keyboard keys is highly unlikely to get you VAC banned. You may however receive a Game ban by the developers for whichever game it is you use it on.

So you want to see if you can get away with things that give you an unfair advantage? Or are you just curious?

You should not use that for the sole reason that it's unfair, isn't that a good enough reason?

Steam controller can do some of that stuff also, even using a normal 360 controller. Don't go beyond that to play it fair.

I wanted to know whether the rules were keeping pace with advancing tech. Swiftpoint are a very niche company, but the Z's technology will filter down into more affordable mice sooner rather than later. And that genuinely concerned me - if everybody started using complex-string macros it'd completely ruin fighting games.

I'm pretty sure this can be done without special hardware and it's probably a problem already, just not sure if it's a small problem or a large one.

Question is doing perfect combos is enough to cause real problems, real players can already do that most of the time? Winning is more than that probably. (I don't play much fighters)

This is a question for another forum probably, maybe https://www.reddit.com/r/Fighters/ or http://forums.shoryuken.com/

Thanks.

And you're right, stringing together perfect combos won't win you anything. It's all about timing, judgement, reaching for the right tool at the right time.
