What exactly is considered cheating?
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7849-Radz-6869#avoidvac

That article is so vague. It safely gives Overwolf a free pass but doesn’t say anything about applications that work in the same way. What is System hardware configuration? Creating drivers?? If so it doesn’t say anything about locally created drivers. I have 16 drivers on my comp all with local domain signature and all used for a variety of things that can easily be used in game. For example, sound input / output altering or controlling desktop (and game) using phone, live video stitching (as in capturing a window, stitch it and project), language macros which mean I translate on demand (reads key input but inputs via different input driver to default one) etc. These are all directly intercepting.

Now I have never been banned ever, but I usually dont last long in games anyway. At present I have a love / hate relationship with DOTA and its slowly moving to love++. So I guess my other questions are:
- Surely considering cheating by definition is to exploit or have unfair advantage, wouldn’t this mean as long as my environment remains in 'read only' for interceptions (which is what ALL recording, whether graphical / input, apps do) then it wouldn’t be considered cheating?
- If I do get banned it would be no biggy, means I dont have to spend time playing. HOWEVER, as someone who spends money on games I would prefer to be falsely banned before I spend money. So, I guess what I am saying is how long is the delay from VAC alleged ban (internally flagged as cheater) -> Actual banning?

If in doubt, don't use whatever. Thing is, if they said what exactly is cheating everyone would try to get as close to it without crossing the line as they can.

In order for something to be illegal it would have to have a policy attached with a definition. No one needs to know 'how' cheats are detected but it is helpful to know what is considered one, otherwise technically everyone is cheating by installing steam, on the grounds that no definition is given but valve said it would ban. Also I am not disabling in house drivers / apps I created myself, mostly because I would very much need to eventually use them in game.
Vac bans are given for altering game files or injecting know cheats into the game itself. As long as you don't do this VAC will not ban you. If you can't be sure what a program does then either research about it or don't use it.

As to delays on bans it can be Day to months (9 is the long I have seen but it was 5 years ago and vacs are much quicker these days.)

Unfortunately for you, that's as clear as it's gonna get.

If you were to get banned, you'd probably expect them to so-called have to attach proof, too.

But they don't do that either. :DEALWITHIT:

I suppose I shouldnt be too paranoid, Warden and Gameguard dont cry when I play games with them on, though I never really last in games long enough to be taken into consideration. But then I dont normally spend money on skins either so I guess its ok to be concerned.
Although it should be said, when I searched for this literally all the threads were CSGO related, didnt find a single DOTA ban. So im going to assume all the hacking and banning happens in games like CSGO. Moba's really arent something one would want to hack / bot in anyway.
If only. There's also GAME bans.

CS:GO has huge problems at the moment it seems. I am a big fan of the game and I had 3 confirmed banned players that I reported myself only last week. And that's just the tip of the iceberg..
Although I play neither, I doubt genre has a lot do with it. Cheaters gonna cheat.

CS:GO-related sob stories are indeed more common.

But that's probably because there's an admission fee if you wanna start over with a clean slate. :NONPLUSSED_CREEP:
