VAC: Open Processes Monitor?
I know a thing or two about various cheat/modding engines, some of which are not marketed at all as a cheating device, but an editor/montor for various processes and such, and there are AV and AMW (Anti-Malware) software out there that also does this.

My only question is if VAC monitors these open processes, because if it does, then yeah, there's that potential for me to fall victim to a VAC ban.

I'll throw open the doors on the closet here and straight up admit that I use Cheat Engine, though mainly for hex address finding in all sorts of programs (that is technically what it is for and little else unless you're good with Lua (I'm not) ). I also use Process Lasso, and various IObit software, which are also under the process monitoring/editing umbrella.

Well, I figured I'd ask, even if I'm not likely to be joining any multi-player servers via Steam any time soon...better to know sooner than too damned late...lol

Just running these programs won't cause a VAC ban, interfering with running VAC protected games though might - the latter you should obv. avoid.

Some food for thought: if you do these kind of alterations, why not do so in a virtual machine, and keep gaming with Steam on the host?

If the programs are open and altering the game's memory then yes theres a risk,

If you have doubt about a program dont have it running when playing games

So, it isn't like the nefarious YouTube bot, that's good.
Hmmm...a virtual machine...

That's just it; I wouldn't know if the IObit software would be or not (this is my AV/AMW software so turning it off is not an option (technically the only way to turn it off is to hard-switch it) ). There's also the Iobit Monitor, which allows one to monitor the usage of RAM, CPU and I/O, and can also be used to sweep the RAM clean. Process Lasso just controls/monitors the various open processes, limits the I/O usage, priority levels and such, terminates processes that are causing issues, and can prevent termination of processes too (among other things).

But if the VAC doesn't monitor open processes, then the worry is unnecessary, hopefully.

If it's a VAC secured game, just run the game with VAC disabled. Should be -insecure, that way you won't run a risk of getting banned.
Obviously you can't connect to VAC secured servers without VAC enabled...
